- Jared Leto Fights Censorship Of 30 Seconds To Mars' 'Hurricane' Video
Singer/director claims video has been banned by a number of outlets for its sexual imagery.
By Gil Kaufman
After spending a month of sleepless nights rushing to finish a 13-minute cut of 30 Seconds to Mars' epic "Hurricane" video, you'd think singer Jared Leto could finally enjoy a bit of a break.
But on the same day that the clip debuted on MTV.com, Leto was back at work, decrying what he called the censorship of the video, which contains copious amounts of S&M imagery, heavily choreographed slo-mo fisticuffs, and an seemingly endless string of controversial images intended to shock and confuse. In a blog entry on JaredLeto.com posted on Monday and titled "BANNED FROM TELEVISION," Leto, who directed the clip under his pseudonym, Bartholomew Cubbins, posted a letter (one of several he claimed he received) from an unnamed executive at an unnamed TV network who explained why the video couldn't be aired in its present state. "Overall the bondage theme will warrant a POST 10 p.m. restriction as the film is in its current form," read the letter. "There is one shot that will have to be removed completely for a POST 10 p.m. restriction. 09:17 — WOMAN RUNS FINGER OVER OTHER WOMAN'S G-STRING-CLAD BOTTOM AND TOUCHES HER ANUS — This shot makes the video completely restricted. There are other bondage shots towards the end of the film that [C]ompliance were unclear about, they would have to view frame by frame on tape to gauge whether they would need to be cut too for POST 10PM. The violence in the film is not graphic and would warrant a POST 7 p.m. restriction. But the overall sexual content does push the restriction up." The letter then goes on to log, scene-by-scene the potentially objectionable images, from one in which Leto's character jumps out of a skyscraper window (not a problem), to another in which a priest, rabbi, and imam burn holy books on a pyre in an alley, and a brief image of hot wax dripping over a woman's body. The breakdown explicitly states more than 40 scenes or images that are restricted to after 10 p.m. and others that are more suitable for showing after 9 p.m. or 7 p.m. "We always knew there would be some images that would have a tough time getting through," Leto told EW.com on Monday about the controversy. "But we didn't expect this kind of pushback that we're getting now." Leto has said he's working on a "creative" solution to edit the original 20-plus-minute clip down so he can at least get it shown before the 10 p.m. curfew. He also told EW.com that the plan all along was to have several versions of the video available to fans, including an uncensored full cut. "I had always planned on having an explicit version and then a version that was not so explicit," Leto said. "The version that we were trying to get on broadcast is not the explicit version, and that's still having a really difficult time." Leto is frankly a bit confused about why the networks that reportedly rejected the video are so upset about the sexual images in it. "I'm not interested in provocation for provocation's sake," he explained. "I just think it's interesting that when you turn on the news or whatever else catches your interest, how much violence and negativity is available out there. As soon as it comes time for sexuality, it's a big shock that people are sexual beings. It's an interesting double standard to me." credit :http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1653208/20101130/30_seconds_to_mars.jhtml?

- Alt-rock band brings new album to Denver's Fillmore
Thirty Seconds to Mars plays the Fillmore on Friday.
Thirty Seconds to Mars is blasting off into the next phase of its career. The alternative band's latest CD, This Is War, has propelled 30 Seconds to Mars into the realm of powerhouse rock outfits. The act's gone through its trials and tribulations, but the new record proves this is a group with solid, long-lasting talent.
Thirty Seconds to Mars has already sold more than 3 million records, earned more than 100 million YouTube hits and played for fans around the globe. The band's touring behind the new record and its ready to hit the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver on Friday.
"We're compelled to go out and do this," guitarist Tomo Millicevic said. "There's always this excitement about creating something new and something that inspires us."
"We're a band that's always trying to push the envelope and make it as exciting and interesting as possible."
Band history In 1998, brothers Jared and Shannon Leto formed 30 Seconds to Mars. If the name Jared Leto rings a bell, that's because he starred on the short-lived TV hit "My So-Called Life" with Claire Danes.
Leto channeled his creative energy into the band, and Thirty Seconds to Mars became known for its mix of hard rock, emo and progressive sounds. However, the group hit a snag when a contract dispute with Virgin Records led to a $30 million lawsuit.
"More or less, we were prepared to make war," Millicevic said. "We felt we should talk to the label about the deal, but they weren't interested. We terminated the contract and they exercised their right to sue us.
"That experience just renewed us, and we decided to move forward and keep our eyes on the prize. If this hadn't happened, we would definitely not have made the same new album. It forced us to fight through stressful times -- we're grateful for the fact that we had a conflict and we were able to use it."
New album Thirty Seconds to Mars' new record is more than just a veiled reference to its 2008 lawsuit. The album's rich sonic tones and emotionally charged lyrics also reference crises in the world economy and politics. The combination of the band's legal battles and global observations inspired the group to create a powerful record.
"Sonically, we knew we wanted to completely change from what we were before," Millicevic said. "This time, we wanted to really go back to old vintage sounds and explore them. "We wanted to create a really exciting sounding record -- our goal was to destroy the past. We recorded everything and anything around us. We used insect and hawk sounds, and even some Tibetan monks."
The band also included its fans on the record.
Thirty Seconds to Mars invited more than 1,000 fans to be part of the recording process. The group held "summits" around the world, and added the fans live voices, screams and stomps to This Is War.
The band captured all the essential sonics for the record, but 30 Seconds to Mars wanted compelling lyrics to accompany the music.
"There's definitely a lot of conflicts and fights where people have to fight for what they believe in," Millicevic said. "We wanted this record to be an anthemic soundtrack for the people. It was written in a time of confusion and chaos, so there's definitely a battle theme to the record. "People should take from it what they want. For us, it definitely was a transformative album. We all changed a lot with what we went through and a lot of different emotions were covered in making this record."
New tour The members of 30 Seconds to Mars have been very busy since the record came out. The band's toured the globe with its new music and created two video versions of its racy single "Hurricane." To add to the excitement, Kanye West lent his vocal skills to the new song. In the end, it's all about the live show -- and 30 Seconds to Mars knows how to deliver a solid concert.
"The focus of these shows is definitely on the new record," Millicevic said. "We have a nice spread of everything we've done and it's a long show. Playing live is definitely an aspect we love about this band.
"We'll be touring most of 2011 with this record. We're going to take this record all over the world -- our shows are a good, safe place to completely let go. And we're definitely going to start working on the next CD."

Out Last Night: 30 Seconds To Mars at The House of Blues

By Maddie GrussendorfPost date:January 25th, 2011 1:21pm
I woke this morning with the image of Jared Leto’s flailing limbs hoisted amidst a sea of pumping fits on my mind, reminiscing on 30 Second to Mars’ second show in a two night stand at the House of Blues. Frontman Jared Leto made it clear rock veterans were in The House. After thirteen years of experience, he owns every inch of the venue stage. Blood loyal fans lined the walls as Leto let the room flood with their voices line after line. Lights cut through the crowd as voices reverberated off the walls, and we all came together in a jump house jamboree. Leto not only stole the spotlight in last night’s House of Blues’ concert, but he allied the audience in a request to start moshing. If only they could. The crowd was too involved hoisting each other up on their shoulders and clutching their fists against their chest to do anything of the sort. Leto may have wanted a rage, but he got euphoria instead, as the crowd continued to jump, pump, and chant as he sang. God, did Leto sing, belting his ballads the way he’s famous for, but it was his on stage etiquette that kept the crowd knee deep in each other’s excitement. He’d cut into songs to demand more noise, and rearrange the crowd as he replaced front row texters with crazed back row thrashers, calling for more, more, and more jumping. At times, even the singer seemed to tire, egging the crowd on to sing while he coughed out word by word between breaths with the audience. Mars came back for one more song along with half the audience by their side. Leto sang “Kings and Queens” with the swaying and screaming of at least a third of his fans behind him on stage. 30 seconds to Mars brought a juggernaut of lights and music to the House of Blues, so much so that the show left me longing for a larger venue. A little advice for the band: next time in Dallas, do one show, but go big. [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]

With Lady Gaga otherwise engaged, 30 Seconds To Mars set to pounce

A little tip for up-and-coming bands looking to distance themselves — and siphon a few discretionary fan dollars away — from touring giants like Lady Gaga and U2: Tour in January and February. Each year ,from the time we all finish the Christmas Ho,Ho-Hoing and the New Years ”Ho-Ho-Hoing” (Don’t lie: Some of you woke up on Jan. 1, following a night of revelry, with a dog-faced boy or girl, praying for a do-over to open 2011) up until around Valentine’s Day, the concert calendar is a veritable wasteland. There was a time when you could at least bank on New Year’s Eve for a couple good shows. Not lately. Sure, a nugget or two will spring up here and there. I’m looking forward to Willie Nelson on Feb. 4 at the Verizon Wireless Theater and Linkin Park on Feb. 15 at Toyota Center, but other than that … virtually bupkis. This early year vacuum in the concert continuum is when groups like 30 Seconds To Mars, who land in Houston on Wednesday at the Verizon Wireless Theater, and any other band looking to upgrade from a van to a tour bus (or tour bus to private plane) should be touring their asses off while the artistic giants wake slowly from their post-holiday malaise. This is not to say that faux-emo rock stylings of 30 Seconds to Mars, led by actor Jared Leto (Requiem For A Dream, Fight Club), isn’t an act worth seeing. It’s just that the most well-known thing about them is that they are a band led by actor Jared Leto. We all saw how the band-led-by-big-celebrity schtick has worked out in the past. Can anyone name Keanu Reeves and Russell Crowe’s respective past touring bands without looking them up? Didn’t think so. The point is that with three albums in nine years — none of which have burned up the Billboard 200 albums charts — and a handful of guitar-gnashing alt-radio hits (including “From Yesterday” and the more recent “Kings and Queens” and ‘This Is War”), the chances of 30 Seconds to Mars grabbing the spotlight during the busy tour months is a long shot. And come March, when RodeoHouston rolls through town and the best of the baby bands roll through Texas for South by Southwest, there will be more shows to choose from than time to see them. On this dog days concert week, however, 30 Seconds to Mars is the best game in town. 30 Seconds To Mars, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Verizon Wireless Theater [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]

- The date, Friday January 21st. The place, The Fillmore Auditorium in
Denver, CO. I was on-hand to see the sold out the ’30 Seconds To Mars’ show. “Why the heck is Jared Leto wearing bright green pants and have a sweater tied around his neck,” you ask? Photo by Tony Bracy Friday night’s shows was one of 30STM’s famous theme nights. This was the ‘yuppie/preppy’ themed show, so the whole band went all out with tacky, over-the-top, yuppie/preppy wardrobes. I do have to say that front man Jared Leto really finished off his look when he came on stage complete with a sweater tied around his neck, bright green dockers, and a tennis racket in his hand for the first couple of songs. Read more about the band’s upcoming theme nights HERE. 30 STM put on a pretty good show; lots of energy, lots of jumping, and lots of crowd interaction. They were on stage for nearly 2 hours. I think my one issue with the show was when Jared Leto played a handful of songs with nothing but an acoustic guitar. Don’t get me wrong, I love acoustic versions of songs, but I’m pretty sure this part of the show lasted 20-30 minutes and it felt almost like he was stalling for something. But hey, maybe the rest of the band needed a break. ( It was nice to not hear a band complaining about the altitude for once.) Overall, it was a great show. They finished up with an encore of “Kings and Queens’ in which they brought about 20-30 fans on stage to make for an epic finale to the night. It’s easy to see why 30STM has such a rabid fan following. [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]

TRADUCTION :
Jared Leto ‘Mars’ is waiting The musician, actor and director focuses on music, with 30 Seconds to Mars, and reveals that hopes to work again with the celebrated director, David Fincher Saturday, 2011-01-29 21:04 MARIO VILLAGRÁN Jordan Catalan, Harry Goldfar and Bartholomew Cubbins hide behind the voice on the other side of the line, answers the phone. Jared Leto is now in its version of rock singer, willing to promote their peculiar love for Mexico, well earned by teenagers and, while on the subject, the two concerts offered at the José Vive Cuervo Salon 30 Seconds to Mars, the group he founded with his brother and apparently walked away from the screens, the days of 8TH and 9th of February. From the days of success on television with the series’ My So Called Life ‘(1992), and representing working as a heroin under the direction of Oscar nominee Darren Aronofsky on “Requiem for a Dream’ speaks little. Of ‘Alexander’, Oliver Stone, anything on the other hand, stops at the character he named Bartholomew Cubbins, inspired by children’s author Dr. Seus, your current link to the cinematographic camera, which focuses on their priority, 30 Seconds to Mars. I decided to become the director of my music and do not stop working on something that is part of my life, such as cameras. Not that I have decided to get away from the film, but my focus is on the band, tour, study, and the public, so I found a way to put my experiences with big directors and start shooting our videos. Definitely the more you learned, and who would ask to work again, either on film or director of one of our videos, would be David Fincher. I think the best, and quite enjoyed the two films in which I participated with him (‘Fight Club’ 1999 and ‘Panic Room’, 2002), “he says, from Los Angeles, Leto, who this new face blemish on your list yet another space of interest in the film industry after being producer of the film ‘Chapter 27′, the murderer of John Lennon, and return to the screen with tape French sci-fiction, ‘Mr. Nobody’. I took a risk and worked with large budgets. I was satisfied with the tribute I made to ‘The Shining’, Kubrick, in ‘The Kill’ and I think that every time I enjoy more. Proof is that the result of doing ‘Hurricane’, thinking of it as a story that could go to the track and have freedoms, it is the best thing that happened behind the camera, “says Jared, insisting that its priority remains the band. And it’s time to talk about it and his unconditional love to our country, which gave the first sold out to the band’s career and which returns to Mexico with the purpose to present their latest production, ‘This Is War’ that emerged after being stuck in a suit for $ 30 million for breach of contract with his label, Virgin. “15 years old last year and we had to make decisions. We are dedicated to perfecting the songs for two years, facing criticism, misunderstandings and legal issues, but the final drive the result is what matters. Shannon and Tomo (the other two members) everything is going better than ever and continue with the tour, which will return to Mexico with great joy, because we were always received with wonder and with love, “he answers, remembering as a “great show” his last appearance in the country in the MTV World Stage, alongside The Smashing Pumpkins and Zoe. Produced by Flood (Mark Ellis), who has worked with Depeche Mode, U2, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and PJ Harvey, along with Steve Lilly white, manager of Dave Matthews Band plates, The Pogues and The Smiths, ‘This is War’ will be the focus of 30 Seconds to Mars on your next visit, after which it will depart to Australia to begin closing the long tour that already crossed the U.S. and several European countries. We’ll play what our fans have asked us, but we teach them what is ‘This is War’, the concept that we have highlighted in this work. We’re really excited to return, “he said.
