The success of 30 Seconds to Mars' This Is War album is as much a tribute to the band's unyielding dedication as it is to their general insanity. After all, they were, for a long while, a band without a home — having been famously sued for $30 million by their label, Virgin Records — or a plan (Jared Leto told MTV News that he intended to sell their still-unfinished album "door to door") if the band couldn't rectify things with Virgin).

Of course, we all know how the story ends. After a long wait, War hit stores in December, spawned two hit singles and served as the launching pad for 30 Seconds to Mars' ever-growing world tour. Perhaps as a tribute to their unwavering commitment, the band was honored with four nominations at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, including nods for Best Rock Video and Video of the Year. (Nominations they promise to celebrate with a very unique arrival at the show on September 12.)

It was a pretty nice reward for all their struggles, and though everything is right in the 30 STM universe these days, that wasn't always the case. So with the VMAs just around the corner, we decided to take a look back at the band's long and bloody battle for their future. There's a reason they decided to call their album This Is War, after all.

In 2009, things were pretty bleak, but rather than be deterred by a mega lawsuit and an uncertain future, 30 Seconds to Mars never backed down. Instead, they pressed on with the album bringing in Kanye West, holding fan-only recording sessions, importing Tibetan monks. They made This Is War bigger and badder, despite the very real possibility that it might never see the light of day. It was either a labor of love or an exercise in lunacy. Maybe both.

Eventually, things reached a breaking point. In the spring of 2009, 30STM's lawsuit was settled, in an effort to "make peace, to move ahead and begin again." And work began on finally bringing This Is War home. Of course, just because they'd made peace with their label, that didn't mean they were going to change the way they'd operated throughout the creation of their album ... quite the opposite, in fact. Emboldened, they set out to make things even bigger than before.

In October 2009, with the release of War still some two months off, they began working on their epic "Kings and Queens" video, a massive, sprawling thing that saw the band — and an army of their Critical Mass cohorts — take over the streets of Los Angeles, riding en masse while the city slept. It was a project of such scale that Jared Leto (who directed under his "Bartholomew Cubbins" alter ego) almost didn't finish the thing, and "Queens" was literally in the edit room until hours before it premiered.

His hard work would be rewarded, as the song — and video — would both hit big, and, in February 30STM prepared to launch their Into the Wild world tour. In April, with the North American leg of the jaunt just around the corner, they shot another epic video, for the album's title track. Featuring Leto and his mates in army fatigues and body armor, "War" looked like a suitable follow-up to "Kings and Queens." Only, months passed, and to date, the video has yet to premiere.

By this point, of course, the band was practically impervious to struggle, so rather than continue to wait for "War" to be completed, they decided to shoot yet another video, a downright spiritual live clip for "Closer to the Edge.". They just set off across North America once again, and there are plans to release a pair of films — one documenting the making of the This Is War album, and a second about the Into the Wild tour — in the near future.

And, yes, Leto says that someday, the "War" video will see the light of day. No matter what it takes to get it done. Conflict is nothing new for his band, after all. As their success seems to prove, they practically thrive on it.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12.

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are fast approaching, which means that soon you'll be treated to an excellent night of performances and appearances by the likes of Eminem, Linkin Park, Usher, Paramore, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine, B.o.B and Deadmau5 (who will serve as the house DJ at the show). While people tend to remember the classic performances and the unhinged moments, the coveted Moonman is the reason why people show up and tune in. This year, there are 16 categories wherein some of the biggest music stars in the universe will compete for the coolest trophy in awards shows. Today, we take a look at one of the nominees in the Video of the Year category.

We have run through 15 other categories, and the only one left is the big one: Video of the Year. Over the next few days (leading up to the actual VMA show this Sunday), we'll take a look at each one of the Video of the Year nominees individually. Next up: 30 Seconds to Mars' "Kings and Queens." Shot by Bartholomew Cubbins (also known as 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto), "Kings and Queens" is one of the few videos nominated for an award this year that doesn't contain complicated special effects or wacky animation. Rather, "Kings and Queens" features little more than a small army of people riding around bicycles through abandoned streets in downtown Los Angeles, which sounds simple but is remarkably arresting. There's something truly electric about the images that Leto captures, which is a testament to his abilities as a filmmaker and video artist.

"Kings and Queens" is all about stunning imagery, and there are a number of shots that really stick: The wildfires burning in the background, the homage to Banksy and the references to "The Warriors" among them. But will the relatively low-key quality of "Kings and Queens" (especially compared to eye-popping extravaganzas like "Bad Romance") work against it? Logic would say yes, but consider Panic! at the Disco's win for Video of the Year back in 2006. They came out of nowhere and toppled titans like Madonna and Britney Spears with the low-key but still visually arresting "I Write Sins Not Tragedies." Upsets like this have happened before, and they could easily happen again.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 for Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

30 Seconds To Mars, Ke$ha Plan Big VMA Arrivals
For much of the past decade, the MTV Video Music Awards has really been two shows: The one where they hand out the Moonmen, and the one that occurs on the red carpet, where the stars try their very best to outdo each other with over-the-top arrivals.
From yachts to 18-wheel trucks, elephants to horse-drawn carriages, how you arrive at the VMAs has become just as important as whether you take home an award. As you can probably imagine, sometimes, things get a little crazy.
"Usually, artists don't let us know [how they're arriving] until the last minute, which makes things interesting," Video Music Awards Pre-Show executive producer Ryan Kroft told MTV News. "A lot of times, they'll want to do things like land a hot-air balloon on the carpet, or drive a car down the carpet, but generally, the fire marshal frowns on those kinds of things, so we have to tell them 'no.' "
Still, there are plenty of ideas that do get the green light, and they're just as epic as the stars that thought them up. And this year's VMA arrivals are no different, though for aesthetic reasons, they're slightly scaled back.
"In New York, we had stars arriving on a fire truck, a double-decker bus, but that wouldn't play this year," Kroft said. "The carpet is designed to look like the stars are arriving at a Hollywood Hills mansion — white, chrome, glass — so having someone arrive with a marching band would seem somewhat out of place."
But there are big arrivals nonetheless: One of the biggest involves 30 Seconds to Mars, who have already started touting their entrance as being thoroughly crazy.
"30 Seconds to Mars are recreating a scene from their 'Kings and Queens' video," Kroft explained. "They'll have an army of bicyclists arriving with them, and they'll be riding bikes themselves. Most of the bicyclists are from the video."
Going equally big is Ke$ha, who has a few surprises ready for the VMA carpet. We don't want to give it all away, but here's what we can reveal: "Ke$ha has big plans for the carpet. I can't talk about all of them, but she is arriving in a Delorean, which she got herself," Kroft said. "It'll be like 'Back to the Future.' "
And, in keeping with grand tradition, there are still plenty of stars who haven't said how they're going to be arriving — Jay Sean is planning something "big and sexy," Soulja Boy Tell'em has some swaggadocious plans in the works, and Bruno Mars is still plotting, too — and then, there's Lady Gaga, who ... well, you never know what she'll do.
"We still don't know what some people are doing," Kroft laughed. "The only way you'll know is to tune in to the VMA Pre-Show and watch."
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday.

Into the Wild world tour.

Prochaine étapes : 30 Seconds to Mars "Kings and Queens".

I Write Sins Not Tragedies".

The brothers Leto -- singer/guitarist Jared and drummer Shannon -- have returned stateside with lead guitarist Tomo Milicevic to deliver more spacewalking rock from their popular power trio Thirty Seconds to Mars. Along for their interstellar ride is the crowd-sourcing project called Faces of Mars, in which fans can upload their mugs onto the cover of limited-edition copies of the multiplatinum band's latest effort, "This Is War," released last December.

They scored Best Rock Video for "Kings and Queens" at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, to go along with their various trophies from Kerrang! and others, as well as a string of No. 1 hits. In advance of the band's Oct. 3 performance at Egyptian Room, Jared Leto talked about Kanye West, tweets from Iran and more.

» You went crowd-sourcing with the Faces of Mars campaign by pulling fans into the creative process online and in a real-time gathering called "The Summit." Are you raising an army to take over Earth?

It was great to do something interactive and include our fans. We ended up doing the first one here in L.A., and about a thousand people showed up from all over the world. It went so well, we did it in eight other countries.

» What impact did that social engineering experiment have?

It really added something special to the songs. I got a Twitter message from someone in Iran who was disappointed because they couldn't make it to any of the global summits that we did. That gave me the impetus to do a digital version of the summit, where people could participate from anywhere.

» What was it like working with Kanye West on "This Is War?" (Editor's note: West's contributions to the track "Hurricane" were removed due to label conflicts.)

He was a pleasure to work with. Easygoing, nice and really hospitable. I think what he did on the song is some of his most interesting singing to date.

Buzzworthy Interview: 30 Seconds To Mars Talk 'Closer To The Edge,' Jared Leto's Hair, Gary Coleman & More (source)

Citation :

Deep breaths, members of the Echelon, passersby and regular ol' Jared Leto fanatics: Here we have a Buzzworthy Blog exclusive video interview with 30 Seconds To Mars. Any chat with 30 Seconds To Mars is pretty awesome, but this one is special since it was the first interview Jared Leto gave after chopping off his Mohawk. I know, right!?
What do VMA winners 30 Seconds To Mars talk about in this Buzzworthy exclusive? What don't they talk about!?
The first subject 30 Seconds To Mars covered is their song "Closer To The Edge." Many Echelon members will consider "Closer To The Edge" a kind of personal anthem, but the song was almost consigned to the dustbin of 30 Seconds To Mars history. According to Jared Leto, the track was "in the trash for about a year," lying around as an instrumental. Even more compelling is the idea of "Closer To The Edge" as a ballad, which was the song's original format.
30 Seconds then cast its own biopic, with pretty funny results. According to Jared Leto, if the 30 Seconds To Mars movie were to be made, the ideal lineup of actors would be Bette Midler, Cyndi Lauper and Crispin Glover. Oh, and the late Gary Coleman. We're already on line for that one.
The band also discusses Jared Leto's hair and suggests we check out ABeautifulLie.Org, which is where the band advocates for the social and environmental issues that are close to their heart.
Watch this funny and engaging video interview with 30 Seconds To Mars, and while you're at it, check out Jared, Shannon and Tomo's video for "Closer To The Edge.

Expanded Epicenter ready to rock the masses

When the new rock festival Epicenter premiered last year, with a stellar lineup that included Tool, Linkin Park, Alice in Chains, Wolfmother and Atreyu, co-creator Gary Spivack -- the man who, along with his company Right Arm Entertainment, is also responsible for Ohio’s popular Rock on the Range bash -- wasn’t sure if the one-off shindig could become an annual event.
Leading up to that event in Pomona, modeled after the massive California Jam bashes of the ’70s, Spivack would only hint that Epicenter’s future hinged on how it fared in its debut. “Let’s just say that if everyone shows up Saturday, that will help the decision,” he told me in our interview last year.

When about 35,000 people turned out, it instantly became clear that there would indeed be a second Epicenter. And though rumors of expansion, relocation and oddly matched headliners making exclusive appearances started swirling months before an official announcement -- accompanied by fake fliers, much like what happens with Coachella every spring -- most of the random postings about what's now billed as Epicenter Twenty Ten, Saturday and Sunday at the Auto Club Raceway in Fontana, turned out to be true.
Saturday's roster pairs the pyrotechnic blasts of Kiss (the only California show from the masked men all year) and the first major performance from Gavin Rossdale and the reunited British grunge rockers of Bush with some of the biggest names in hip-hop, including newly sober and still chart-topping Eminem (in his sole West Coast appearance this year) and OutKast’s Big Boi. Also on tap: Papa Roach, House of Pain, Crash Kings, Big B with Scott Russo, the Knux, Smile Empty Soul, Deuce, Kinda Major and the Envy.
Sunday's fare, capped by Blink-182’s only North American performance in 2010, boasts a more punk-based bill that also features Rise Against (its only California gig all year), Jared Leto’s band Thirty Seconds to Mars, and sets from mainstays like Bad Religion and Suicidal Tendencies, as well as the unveiling of former Pennywise frontman Jim Lindberg’s new band, the Black Pacific. Also slated to play: Against Me!, A Day to Remember, the Academy Is ..., Black Veil Brides, New Politics and Biffy Clyro.
For L.A.-based Thirty Seconds to Mars, Epicenter marks not only its largest local show yet but one of few times the band has actually performed in America in the last couple years.

Despite occasional homecomings, like a May gig at the Greek Theatre and a brief set last December as part of KROQ’s annual Almost Acoustic Christmas gatherings at Gibson Amphitheatre, the band -- vocalist/guitarist Leto plus his drumming brother Shannon Leto and guitarist Tomo Milicevic, plus assorted supporting players -- has mostly performed overseas, performing to tens of thousands at sold-out arenas in the U.K., France, Germany and Japan.
Once a lengthy run behind second album A Beautiful Lie (from 2005) came to an end, there wasn't much time to tour stateside before the trio headed back into the studio -- and wound up taking nearly 18 months to record its latest disc, This Is War, which also established that the group now spells out the 30 in its moniker.
The recording process, Shannon Leto says in a recent phone interview, was a “grueling journey,” but the album that came from it has spawned two of the group’s bigger radio singles, the title track and, more recently, “Kings and Queens.” TSTM was also nominated for four trophies at the annual MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month, including video of the year and best rock video for that latter smash, though the trio took home only one Moon Man, as it mostly got beat out by show-sweeping sensation Lady Gaga.
“We were way, way surprised,” Leto says. “We were like the only rock band that won anything, so it was exciting. You don’t expect it because you’re just making this music, you know, and doing what you do, and you’re not sure what the outcome is going to be and what people will think about it. It’s amazing when you wake up in Finland (on tour) and you hear that you’ve been nominated for four awards. It’s like, ‘Where the hell did that come from?’”
TSTM is looking forward to taking part in Epicenter’s burgeoning reputation: “It’s cool (to play festivals) because you get in front of people that you normally wouldn’t play in front of,” Leto says. “And we get to see other great bands, too -- so it’s exciting and the energy at those things is always great.”
Following this appearance, the band will head across the Atlantic once again for more dates in the U.K, but Leto says they’ll be back touring in America with a “big, big tour in the spring.” Since the band put so much blood, sweat and tears into This Is War, Leto says there really hasn’t been time to focus on anything else other than spreading the word about what they consider their most personal work so far.
“We’re definitely revealing ourselves a lot more,” he says. “Not that we were holding ourselves back in any sense, but I think with this record you can hear each of our personalities. It definitely defines who we are to date. As we keep evolving through this musical experience, I think you become more and more you. But things change, so who really knows? On the next album we could write about something that’s not us -- but this album right now is the most ‘us’ album.”
The material on This Is War not only finds the group contending with inner battles but also with more external struggles, whether it be the current political climate or the $30 million lawsuit it has settled with former label Virgin Records. Just a few years ago, throwing in the towel might have seemed an easy out; now, recent achievements have made life pretty sweet.
“You never know what’s going to happen,” Leto says. “We had disappeared for a while, especially from America, and to come home and have two No. 1 (on modern-rock charts) and get best rock video nomination -- that’s pretty cool. Honestly, I don’t know what to make of it. It kind of weirds me out a little because I’m just doing my thing and I’m wrapped up in creating and touring, so the accolades that come -- it’s kind of hard for me to relate to.”
Epicenter Twenty Ten takes place Saturday (with Kiss, Eminem, Bush, Papa Roach and more) and Sunday (with Blink-182, Rise Against, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Bad Religion and more) at the Auto Club Speedway, 9300 Cherry Ave., in Fontana. Tickets are $79.50 for one day, $149.50 for two, $199 for single-day VIP, $395 for weekend VIP.

Thirty Seconds to Mars about to land at Diamond Ballroom

The guys in Thirty Seconds to Mars had the whole world in their band while making their epic third album, "This is War,” and they've been paying the world back since the record's release in December by relentlessly touring the globe and returning the musical love in live performance.

Oklahoma City will receive its share when singer/guitarist Jerod Leto, drummer Shannon Leto and guitarist Tomo Milicevic arrive at the Diamond Ballroom on Thursday.

"We're touring until Christmas this year,” Milicevic said from his Los Angeles home last week. "We have a sold out tour in the U.K. and in Europe that we'll finish out the year with. And we'll go to South Africa to play a couple of arenas as well, and then we'll start back up in January or early February.”Before it's all over, maybe all the fans who contributed to the music and package design of "This Is War” will get to see Thirty Seconds for an hour or so, in person onstage.

"It was really just a way for us to say thank you to the audience out there, to the fans of the band, and to include them in our creative process,” Milicevic said, referring to the fact that more than 100,000 voices — dubbed "The Echelon” — sing in unison in the background throughout the record. It all started with a recording experiment that became what the band calls "The Summit,” held in April 2009 at Hollywood's Avalon Club, where roughly 1,000 fans from all over the world convened to lend their stomps, shouts, screams, claps and hums to the album.

The first Summit was such a success that the band held eight more of them around the world, resulting in thousands of participants. And when the band received a Twitter message from a fan in Iran, bemoaning the fact that he couldn't get to any of the Summits, the Leto brothers and Milicevic invited everyone with a computer or a mobile recording device and an Internet connection to record sounds and vocals and submit them through TwitVid. Entries buzzed in from the U.S., Australia, Italy, Germany, France, Japan, Mexico, the U.K., Canada and Iran, giving Thirty Seconds to Mars devotees a chance to enhance music that was already more adventurous and expansive than anything the band had done before.

"It's pretty obvious, I think, that they're completely different beasts, those two records,” Milicivic said, comparing "This Is War” to the band's previous album, "A Beautiful Lie.”

"And this time around we made the record with (producers) Flood (U2, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins) and Steve Lillywhite (U2, The Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel), and we were just going for a kind of a broader sound and just a different direction. We wanted to play completely different instruments. We played in completely different keys across the board.”

Indeed, the songs, all written by actor-turned-musician Jared Leto, are awash with dozens of imaginative effects and towering layers of vintage synthesizers, all swirling out a sonically rich mix of goth-prog and new wavish synth-rock on tunes such as the hit single "Kings and Queens” and the emotionally stormy "Night of the Hunter.”

Although the album was more than two years in the making, Milicivic said Jared's acting career (which has included prominent roles in "Lonely Hearts,” "Lord of War,” "Panic Room” and "Fight Club”) never caused any delays.

"That's just how long it takes us to do it,” Milicivic said. "I mean, when he's making a record that's all he's doing. So, we just were holed up in a studio for two years, and we just refused to stop until we knew it was right.”

Jared's idea for the global chorus was just the icing on the cake. Then he took the idea a step further, using the individual photos of fans, friends and fellow musicians to produce 2,000 different album covers for "This Is War.”

"That was really just a natural progression from what we had already been doing,” Milicivic said.

So, Jared's the idea man?
"Yeah,” the guitarist said. "He's full of 'em.”

30 Seconds To Mars Call 'Hurricane' Video 'Meditation On The Violence Of Sex'
'It's a very ambitious project,' says frontman Jared Leto.

By James Montgomery (@positivnegativ)

Based on what Jared Leto has already told us, 30 Seconds to Mars' upcoming "Hurricane" video is going to be "very, very sexual," and may feature a cameo from Kanye West.

VIDEO ICI

What else can Leto tell us about the video? Well, since he's still planning it, there's not a whole lot more he's willing to reveal, but he does have a concept that he's more than happy to discuss. A dirty, dangerous one.
" 'Hurricane' as a video, like I said before, is going to be very, very sexual," he said. "It's basically a meditation on the violence of sex, and the sex of violence ... and it's going to be quite an adventure."
It sure sounds that way. Of course, there's still a long way to go before the band even starts shooting the clip — trying to schedule the thing in-between dates on their Into the Wild Tour is proving to be quite the challenge — but Leto is determined not only to get it done, but to make sure it lives up to the rather epic standard of the band's earlier videos, including the VMA-winning "Kings and Queens" and the soul-saving "Closer to the Edge."
And while the stress of pre-production has left his voice a little ragged (that and the singing), Leto says not to worry: Not only will "Hurricane" happen, it's going to be the kind of video 30 STM fans have come to expect from the band: very, very big.
"We're in the midst of plotting and planning right now ... my voice isn't worn out just because of the singing; it's been a really intense time, without much sleep," he said. "[The] 'Hurricane' video is shaping up to be quite an undertaking. We may be shooting in New York City and it's a very ambitious project."

Jared Leto Hopes To Release Kanye West Duet
The 30STM frontman claims it's one of the strongest things Yeezy has done...

12:24, Tuesday, 28 September 2010

30 Seconds To Mars singer Jared Leto has stated that the bands collaboration with Kanye West will 'eventually be released.'
30STM's duet with the rapper, entitled Hurricane, was meant to be released as part of their 2009 LP, This Is War, but West's contribution to the track was cut-out before the album was finalised.
Now, Leto has told our US Team that he hopes Yeezy's 'phenomenal' lyrics on the track will be included for the re-release of the tune.
Jared explained: "Let's put it this way: It's a collision of two worlds, and I think it's a completely unexpected surprise.
"He's not only on the track, but he's phenomenal on the track... It's one of the strongest things that he's done, in my opinion."
The frontman continued: "His singing is incredible on it, and he's done a lot of really wonderful work, and I think this only adds to his work as a whole... Working with him was an incredible experience."
Speaking of the track itself, he added: "It is a song that's on the darker side of things. It's the flipside of Kings and Queens - which has a through line of optimism and hope, and a really strong spirit to it - this song explores a different territory, and his lyrics do the same."
Leto also hinted that Kanye may even star alongside him in the video for Hurricane, teasing: "I think that would be an interesting element to add for sure. We'll just have to see."

Lots of bands talk about wanting their concerts to be a shared experience with an audience, where the fan feels connected to the band and as much a part of the show as the musicians on stage.

Few groups have achieved this goal as fully or as clearly as Thirty Seconds to Mars -- which will be looking to enjoy that symbiotic relationship Saturday at the UCCU Center arena at UVU.

Prior to recording its current hit CD, "This is War," the band's singer/guitarist Jared Leto invited about 1,000 fans from all over to Hollywood's Avalon Club, where he recorded them humming, shouting, screaming, clapping and otherwise making noise. That event prompted Leto to hold eight more of these "summits" in cities across the globe, and later invite fans to submit recorded sounds through the internet.

The results of this experiment can be heard throughout "This is War" as arena-size vocals from fans accent several songs.

Now concert audiences have been taking the cue from the "This is War" CD, chiming in with their hands, voices and feet at the points in songs where crowd sounds had been placed.

"They're like stomping, chanting and clapping, just like the recording," drummer Shannon Leto said during a late-August phone interview. "So it's definitely an experience that's exciting to be able to share."

As for the band's own performance and stage production, Leto (he's Jared's brother) likes how things have come together on stage as well.

"The show is really ... it's chaotic, it's energetic, it's madness," he said. "I mean, it's like my brother used to say, 'It has the energy of the Sex Pistols with the grandiosity of Pink Floyd.' I always liked that."

The Leto brothers and the other member of Thirty Seconds to Mars, Tomo Milicevic, deserve to be having fun these days.

The couple of years that preceded the release of "This is War" weren't always pleasant. One source of discontent involved the band's relationship with its label, EMI/Virgin Records.

The label sued Thirty Seconds to Mars for $30 million, alleging that the band had failed to fulfill its contractual requirement to deliver three CDs.

The suit was settled out of court in 2009, but not before both the band and the record label hunkered down for an all-out court battle. As part of the settlement, the band is forbidden from discussing details of the agreement or the issues that caused the two sides to rattle sabers. Leto did, however, deny that there was any dispute over royalties, saying that, "We just weren't being treated fairly" and "We just had to stand up for what we believed in."

In any event, it's clear the dispute took a toll on the three band members, and the "This is War" title of the latest CD relates in part to the lawsuit -- although its meanings go well beyond that for the band.

"We were being sued for $30 million. The world was melting down financially," Leto said. "There were a lot of changes going on and a lot of challenges, obstacles, and we were at war in a sense."

On top of the dispute with Virgin, the three band members were also attempting to essentially reinvent the Thirty Seconds to Mars sound. Working out exactly how the music was going to evolve was not an easy or entirely peaceful process.

"When you're trying to push yourself and trying to do something different, you know, there are emotions and feelings that pop up," Leto said. "And I think that during the making of 'This is War,' there was a lot of that going on. I mean, we were pushing each other all the time to try things new, and just life, on life's terms, period, there was a lot of that going on, a lot of life stuff, a lot of situations. But the record encapsulates everything that we went through. This record is a record that captures each of our personalities pretty well. And it gives a direction for where we're going to go with the music. Boy, what a crazy time."

That said, there were plenty of good times during the recording sessions as well, Leto said. And getting to work with the primary producer on the album, Flood, was another highlight for the band. Flood, as many know, has produced U2, as well as Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails.

Interestingly, the music on "This is War" has a more than a little of the anthemic U2 sound to it. But Leto was quick to say that the musical and sonic direction of the latest album was a full team effort, and not merely the influence Flood had on the project.

"We were all working together," Leto said. "We had a direction we wanted to go in. We had an idea of what we wanted. And Flood came in and he was a perfect match for what we wanted. We all had the same vision. We had all of the songs written and he came in and he did his mad scientist experimentation, if you will. Yeah, I can't give anything away. It's a Flood secret. But, yeah, we had the most amazing time working with him. It was a milestone. He's a genius."

The sound that Thirty Seconds to Mars and Flood crafted is a notable shift from what the band has presented earlier in its career.

The Leto brothers had been playing music together for years by the time Thirty Seconds to Mars was signed by Virgin Records in 1998. When the 2002 self-titled debut CD arrived, it featured a sound that blended edgy yet melodic guitar rock with electronics, resulting in a somewhat futuristic feel.

At that point, the band got much of its attention because of Jared Leto's success in another line of work -- acting. He had gained considerable attention for roles in such high-profile films as "The Panic Room," "Fight Club" and "Alexander," and some assumed 30 Seconds to Mars was mostly a vanity project for him.

But that talk died down as it has become apparent that Jared Leto was focusing his efforts on the band.

By the time the second CD, "A Beautiful Lie," arrived in 2005, Thirty Seconds to Mars had grown into a full-fledged band with the addition of Milicevic and since-departed bassist Matt Wachter.

"A Beautiful Lie" saw the group scale back on the use of electronics and employ a leaner guitar-centered, hard rock sound. The new sound connected in a big way as the CD topped a million copies sold in the United States and produced a chart-topping alternative rock single in "From Yesterday" and a top five alternative rock hit with "The Kill (Bury Me)."

Now with "This is War," Thirty Seconds to Mars has reinvented its sound once again, scaling back on the gritty guitars and aggressive beats, employing a good number of synthesizers and other electronic candy and going for a more spacious, anthemic -- and yes, U2-ish -- type of sound. The sound works well, and "This is War" is becoming the band's biggest CD yet, with "Kings and Queens" and the title song both having topped the alternative rock chart.

The emotional ups and downs that went into the album make the current success that much more sweet, Shannon Leto said.

"It feels really, really good because you never know what is going to happen," Leto said. " We were just kind of doing what we've done. And what's really nice is when you do that and it's successful, the feeling is something that it's special."
