- It Only Takes 30 Seconds To Get To Mars- Review
Last night’s show was out of this world, almost literally! When Jared Leto is in charge, there’s no guarantees as to what will happen. It’s like he grabbed the world in his hand, threw it, and put something else in its place. Something even I can’t explain. Last night’s show at Northern Lights proved that rescheduling a show three times does not matter to fans. It was a sold out event, and I think every single person showed up! There were people from Vermont and even Montreal that drove hours just to see 30 Seconds to Mars perform. I can’t speak for them, but I’m sure they would say it was well worth the trip. One of my favorite parts of the night was two young girls who traveled from Montreal to be at the show. They couldn’t have been more than 18-years-old, and they made their own 30 STM shirts and drove over five hours. They also spoke French, and were so cute and friendly. We were told to invite some people from the crowd to the meet and greet, so I picked them due to their devotion to the band. They reminded me of myself, only a few years younger. The looks on their faces were priceless. It made me so happy to make their night. There was only one opening band: California-based two-man band Middle Class Rut, made up of Zack Lopez and Sean Stockham in 2006. I give these guys credit for attempting to do what usually a group of four or five do, and sometimes duo’s make it really far, however I think they took on too much and tried to do too much. I think investing in one or two more members would help them out immensely. Their sound just seemed frantic and scattered, as frontman Lopez had to keep up with his vocals and guitar, while Stockham had drum and vocal duty. Since they are a duo, it would be more noticeable if they messed up as well. I think they would benefit from divvying up the musical chores than trying to take them all on themselves. After a short intermission, the crowd’s wait was over, and they came on. Jared, Shannon and Tomo took the stage, and the aura changed. Everything was covered in white light; so bright that frontman Jared Leto wore flattering sunglasses for the first few songs. It truly was like a spaceship was about to land at any second. It was amazing, and the crowd went nuts. Speaking of the crowd, many fans participated in what was called “white night,” where they dress entirely in white in support of the band. It also represents “carpe diem” and unity to 30 Seconds. (There have been other theme nights during the tour as well, such as “black night” and “Hurricane night”). It was really cool to see how many people took the time to deck themselves out in all white. It just added to the intensity of the white lights. Jared Leto is a fabulous performer. I don’t even think I saw the other two band members all night due to the lights and my focus on Jared. He came out in sunglasses and with a jacket on, and eventually took them both off (it was a change from the black and white fleece snuggie he was wearing in the meet and greet!). He was also in white and at times even looked shirtless, which I’m sure no one would’ve complained about. Jared was very interactive with the crowd. He often let them sing, as he would turn the mic around so everyone could hear them perfectly chanting together to the tune of the songs. At one time he even let a bunch of people up on stage with him. I’ve only seen this one other time (The Used!!) and he took his time picking people and making deals with them, for example the next five people who crowd surf will be the final five picked. He picked individuals out as well which I thought was awesome of him. “The kid with the black shirt, the one with the green hair, oh and you over there with the mohawk.” 30 Seconds played for about an hour and fifteen minutes, and played the following songs (not all are listed): “Beautiful lie,” “Attack,” “The Kill” and “This is war.” While Jared was joined on stage by fans, they performed “Kings and queens,” which I thought was appropriate, as each person up there probably felt like a king or queen. “From yesterday” and “Hurricane” were also done, but acoustically. They are not naturally acoustic songs, but they were amazing with just a guitar and Jared’s voice. The crowd went crazy all night, as did my mind and heart with admiration for this trio. Reguardless of whether or not anything about the band or its name has to actually do with space of any sorts, watching 30 Seconds to Mars was really like being in another dimension, another world. Jared easily grabs the attention and minds of all in the room and brings them wherever he wants. I enjoyed it, and can’t wait to be taken to another world again someday. credit : [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] pics : [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]

Mais là, on arrive vraiment à comprendre ce qu'il (ou elle d'ailleurs !) a ressenti : "It’s like he grabbed the world in his hand, threw it, and put something else in its place. Something even I can’t explain" , "watching 30 Seconds to Mars was really like being in another dimension, another world", et autres superlatifs... Et ça sans aucune moquerie, aucune ironie quand il/elle parle de la dévotion des fans... Encore une fois, ça fait vraiment plaisir à lire, et ça met de bonne humeur pour la journée ! | |

Jared Leto and his band 30 seconds to Mars have been enjoying great coffee on their brief trip to Melbourne. Picture: Fiona Hamilton Source: Herald Sun
AMERICAN rockers 30 Seconds to Mars took some time out of their whirlwind Australian tour for a Melbourne fix yesterday.
“It’s great, it’s a really pretty city,” frontman Jared Leto said.
“We walked out a little bit today — it’s gorgeous and the fans are always fantastic.”
The band behind Closer to the Edge hit Melbourne’s Godfrey St for an exclusive pop-up gig, Nissan Micra’s Take 40 Live, last night. But the Los Angeles trio took plenty of time to enjoy the city — and its coffee.
“We had a coffee and it was dang good. Luckily, there’s a place over the road,” said guitarist Tomo Milicevic.
“I’m having a coffee as we speak,” drummer Shannon Leto chimed in.
The band will play Soundwave Festival tomorrow before heading to Adelaide and Perth.

Thirty Seconds to Mars: expect the unexpected
The three hunks of Thirty Seconds to Mars promise to give UAE fans the time of their life. Krita Coelho finds out what’s going on in the American band’s eventful life.
- Created in 1998, 30 Seconds to Mars shot to fame in 2002 when it released its first album of the same name.

I’m well aware that rock bands and their ilk can come up with the most bizarre of names, but the moniker Thirty Seconds to Mars makes you feel like there’s something sinister going on there. And we are still in the dark after the explanation we got. Jared Leto, the actor-turned-frontman of the American music group, maintains that Thirty Seconds To Mars has little to do with space or the universe as one would think. In fact it’s a name that works for the band on several different levels. “Most importantly, it is a good representation of our sound. It’s a phrase that is lyrical, suggestive, cinematic, and filled with immediacy. It has some sense of otherness to it. The concept of space is so overwhelming and all encompassing I doubt there is a song written that doesn’t fall within it,” he says. Whatever the reason, we won’t really have to go by the name as Thirty Seconds to Mars will be right here in Abu Dhabi for fans to find out. The band too is ecstatic about its maiden performance in the Middle East and there couldn’t have been a better place than the UAE to start off. “Yes… we’ve heard so much about the UAE, so being able to play there is amazing!” says drummer Shannon Leto. So what can we expect at the concert? “Expect the unexpected,” he says. Created in 1998, the band shot to fame in 2002 when it released its first album 30 Seconds to Mars. It also has two other studio albums A Beautiful Lie (2005), This Is War (2009) and two extended plays – AOL Sessions Undercover (2007) and To the Edge of the Earth (2008). Its last album This is War has been certified gold in several countries including Germany and Australia, double-gold in the UK and double-platinum in Belgium. The band has the distinction of winning 42 awards, including TRL’s Best New Artist in 2007, MTV Europe Music Award’s Rock Out the same year and Video Star in 2008 at the MTV Asia Awards. In 2010, it was the Best International Band at The Relentless Energy Drink Kerrang! Awards and picked for Best Rock Video for Kings & Queens at the MTV Video Music Awards. Now Thirty Seconds to Mars commands a legion of young fans. Its music has certainly evolved since the boys first began playing together and as Shannon says change was imperative to their success. “The world is changing so we change with it. We always aim to do something different from album to album,” says the drummer. If you listen to the tracks of Thirty Seconds to Mars, you observe that the band doesn’t stick to a set genre. Though mostly known as an alternative rock band, critics say its tunes could be labelled hard rock, emo, neo-progressive, post-grunge and so on. However, when asked to classify their music, Shannon shies away from the question. “I don’t classify us,” is all he says. Managing a band these days, and a successful one at that, is no mean task, so what has been their biggest challenge as a band? “Dealing with the financial angle,” says Shannon. Quite naturally in August 2008, the band found themselves in limbo as Virgin Records filed a $30 million lawsuit against them. The group had reportedly refused to deliver three albums as required by a contract. The case has been settled but it seems to have inspired the music group’s prized album This is War. At least that’s what Shannon says. “The experiences that surrounded us at the time were the influences… being sued for $30 million had a big impact along with the global financial meltdown,” he says. Jared Leto writes the songs, Shannon Leto plays the drums and Tomo Milicevic plays lead and bass guitar. During tours Jared, Tomo and Shannon are usually joined by Matt McJunkins on the bass and Braxton Olita on keyboards, rhythm guitar and backing vocals. There was a time when music videos were made only to promote albums. But these guys have gone a step ahead and have received a lot of acclaim for their videos because of their creative storylines. Rumour has it that Jared directs the videos but prefers to do so under a pseudonym, however, Shannon prefers to remain tight-lipped. “No comment,” he says when prodded. Shannon, however, acknowledges that Jared does have a strong hand in the creative process. “Videos are another form in which my brother (Jared) expresses himself and he has a lot of passion in the creative process and he shows this in the videos.” One such video for Hurricane was banned on music channels because of its explicit content. Jared defends it by saying, “I never set out to make a controversial film. I didn’t set out to make a film that would get banned – as it has – from several networks around the world, and restricted to night-time broadcast,” he said. “I didn’t really have those things in mind, I just set out on this journey and followed my creative instincts to tell the truth.” Thirty Seconds to Mars has formed a street team called Echelon (after one of their songs) for diehard fans. It’s meant to pull friends to the band’s shows, and prod fans to request local radio stations to air the band’s songs, put up posters, post blogs on online forums or bulletin boards, nominate the band for awards and maintain magazines or websites dedicated to the band. “Some people ask us if this is a cult, I say it’s something special, it’s not for everyone, it’s only for those who understand,” says Jared. And how does one join the Echelon? “They just need to believe in us,” says Shannon. Going by the band’s hardcore fan base, I’m curious to know what they’d want a fan to do for them. “Open their minds and be creative,” says Shannon. That brings us to the question of the very passionate cover of Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance that the group had recorded. “Jared brought us the song and it was a natural thing when we played it,” says Shannon. The boys make no bones about the fact that they love touring. It is the support of the fans that gives them a high. “I was always interested in active participation from the audience. We’ve always been really open and engaged with our listeners,” says Jared. It’s no surprise then that on a parting note when asked about the future projects as a band, Shannon says, “To tour, tour, tour…” Jared Leto
Jared Leto is a Hollywood actor best known for his roles in American Psycho, Lord Of War, Girl, Interrupted, Fight Club and Panic Room. He’s now the frontman of the band and also plays the rhythm guitar and keyboards. Despite his Hollywood connections, Jared prefers not to use this position to promote the band. He’s known to refuse venues that use his name to promote the band. Shannon Leto Shannon Leto is the drummer and percussionist for the band, which started out as a family project. He’s Jared Leto’s elder brother. Tomo Milicevic Tomo Milicevic joined the band in 2003, replacing original member Matt Wachter. He’s the man who plays the lead guitar, violin, bass and keyboard parts. Credit : [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]

- Jared Leto Says 30 Seconds To Mars Could Tour Australia Again In 2011
Jared Leto Says 30 Seconds To Mars Could Tour Australia Again In 2011 Post by: Ronny Lerner 9 March, 2011 - 1:14 PM 30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto has told Triple M that his band plans a very quick return to Australia after their involvement in the recently-completed Soundwave Festival. Leto suggested that 30 Seconds To Mars could even be back before the end of the year after having ‘a really great time’ Down Under. Watch Higgo's interview with Jared Leto! “We’re plotting and planning to return hopefully before the end of the year,” Leto told Triple M’s Higgo. The positive reception the band routinely receives in Australia is a major factor behind the band’s desire to come back to the country as soon as possible, according to Leto. “We’ve always had a really great time coming to Australia,” he said. “From the very beginning, the first show we played in Australia was explosive and it’s always been like that.” “So (we’ve) been fortunate from the beginning and I think these festivals have reconfirmed all of that for us and made us even more excited about coming back.” How psyched are you about seeing 30 Seconds To Mars again this year?

- GREATEST TIME OF YOUR LIVES’ PROMISE AS ROCK BAND THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS GEAR UP FOR THEIR YAS ISLAND SHOW WEEKENDS 2011 GIG
Thirty Seconds To Mars reveal what rock fans can expect from their FLASH Forum show on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, as organisers FLASH Entertainment announce a sell out
With Kanye West and The Killers’ Brandon Flowers among their most famous fans, US rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars’ Yas Island gig at the FLASH Forum this weekend is an A-list approved event that promises UAE fans “the greatest time of their lives”.
The concert on Friday (March 11th) is part of the Yas Island Show Weekends 2011 and fans could be in for a major treat as the boys recently covered their very own acoustic version of Lady Gaga’s monster hit ‘Bad Romance’ during a Live Lounge session for the UK’s BBC Radio One – winning a trophy for ‘Ultimate Live Lounge Cover’! – and they’ve been featuring the track on the set list for their current world tour.
With their hugely anticipated collaboration with Kanye West on the track ‘Hurricane’ released late last year, UAE fans could be in with a chance of hearing the song Thirty Seconds To Mars’ frontman Jared Leto describes as “a collision of two worlds”. And given the band’s penchant for getting members of the audience up on stage for their epic ‘Kings & Queens’, fans can expect plenty of crowd participation too, with Jared telling MTV Asia: “We’re always inspired by our audience. We encourage interactivity.”
With a tour set list that’s packed with all the hits from their most recent album ‘This Is War’, including ‘Kings & Queens’ which won the 2010 MTV Video Music Award for ‘Best Rock Video’, ‘Closer To The Edge’ and ‘Into The Wild’ as well as tracks from their first two studio albums, the eponymous ‘Thirty Seconds To Mars’ and ‘A Beautiful Lie’, Jared, his brother Shannon and third band member Tomo Milicevic will celebrate their first ever concert in the Gulf before thousands of fans who are snapping up tickets to see the band who’ve won a massive 42 awards throughout their 13 years of performing.
With music critics at last month’s Soundwave Festival in Sydney, Australia bowled over by Jared’s ability to energetically “bounce around the stage” during the band’s performance, lead guitarist and keyboard player Tomo Milicevic also spoke out about the band’s impending Yas Islands Show Weekends 2011 gig at the FLASH Forum, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.
“I know Jared’s been trying for a while to get to some different places,” he told Beat magazine. “For us, touring is… about the experience. We want to travel and we want to see different places, and if there’s people out there who want to have a concert experience with Thirty Seconds To Mars we’ll come there.
“We want to experience different cultures and just see what’s out there. We have this amazing opportunity to contribute to local culture in a way that’s unique, and we feel very lucky about that.”
So, what can the Gulf’s Thirty Seconds To Mars fans expect from the LA-based rock band’s first live show in the region?
“We just want to go out and give people the greatest time of their lives,” says Tomo.
Gig-goers can enjoy a huge range of deals and discounts with students receiving 15 per cent off the price of their tickets, Golden Circle Ticket Holders enjoying 20 per cent off dinner at Cipriani & Yotto and a 30 per cent discount on entry to Allure, and all Yas Island Show Weekend 2011 concert ticket holders getting 20 per cent off an entry pass to Ferrari World on weekdays (10 per cent on weekends) when used within seven days of the concert.
There is also a free shuttle bus service that will be operating on concert night. Shuttles run every 20 minutes beginning at 4.00pm from the Yas Plaza Hotel to the FLASH Forum, the Yas Marina Yacht Club, to the Yas Hotel, then to Ferrari World and then back to the Yas Plaza Hotel.
FLASH Entertainment has confirmed that tickets to Thirty Seconds To Mars are now sold out and they kindly ask that people without a ticket do not make their way to the FLASH Forum on Friday as no tickets will be available on the door.
FLASH Entertainment would like to remind fans that it operates a strict no re-admittance policy on show night. Guests that exit the concert will not be granted access back into the venue.
Yas Island Show Weekends is proudly supported by Aldar, Yas Island, Ferrari World, Yas Links Abu Dhabi, Yas Hotel, Radisson Blu Hotel, Yas Island Rotana, Yas Marina Circuit, Park Inn Abu Dhabi and Crowne Plaza Hotel.

- 30 Seconds to Mars talks about upcoming concert
Driven by constant change, 30 Seconds to Mars have transformation to thank for their success. The battle’s not over, explains drummer Shannon Leto as they come to the UAE
It’s not every day that a song comes along and is instantly adopted as a battle cry. But that’s just what This Is War has done. From being used at anti-legislation protests in the US and anti-government rallies in Iran and home-made protest videos on YouTube, the song, written by 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto, has attained anthemic proportions. “To the right, to the left, we will fight till the death; To the edge of the Earth; It’s a brave new world,” Leto screams in the song, also the title of their third album. That war is coming to Abu Dhabi on Friday. Shannon Leto, the band’s drummer and a founding member, tells tabloid! it’s quite poignant to be coming to the region at this time. The band, he says, was going through its own transformation when his brother Jared wrote the song two years ago. “We were going through major changes,” he says. “We were being sued for $30 million [Dh110.18 million] by our former label and had to finance our own album, a new president was being sworn in in the US and the financial world was having a melt-down. “I think if we weren’t going through those experiences, we wouldn’t have the album we have today. It wouldn’t sound like it does and it wouldn’t have been called This Is War. “But sometimes you have to go to war and fight for what you believe in and fight for what is fair. And here we are today,” he adds. Released in December 2009, This Is War is 30 Seconds to Mars’ third studio album. Since its release, it has earned Gold status in multiple countries and the singles Kings And Queens, This Is War and Closer To The Edge have since hit No 1 across many global charts.
‘Very excited’
Currently on a world tour, the band, in Australia when the interview was conducted, will touch down in the capital tomorrow for their first Middle Eastern performance, before jetting off to countries across Europe and Latin America. Fans in the UAE can expect the unexpected, promises Leto. “We have the grandiosity of Pink Floyd and the energy of the Sex Pistols. So it’s going to be pretty exciting, and I can’t wait to experience the energy the crowd will have. “We are very excited to come to Abu Dhabi and also hopefully Dubai. It’s a very mysterious place to me and I’ve heard it’s a beautiful, traditionally enriched country and I cannot wait to go and experience it myself.” Formed in 1998 as a small project by the Leto brothers, 30 Seconds to Mars released their first major studio album in 2002. Claiming their name off a chapter of a Harvard University professor’s thesis, in a vague reference to how technology has made our lives faster, the band insists the reference for them is to the far-reaching nature of their music and songs. And quite rightly so. “I remember while we were making This Is War, we held a summit,” recalls Leto. “We had about 2,000 different fans from all over the world come to Los Angeles and help us in the creative process. There was a lot of chanting, a lot of stomping and screaming. Then, someone caught the video in Iran and wrote to us telling us how desperately they wanted to join us. “So Jared came up with an idea of a digital summit. The end result was we had thousands and thousands of people singing in our record. It’s kind of Earth’s record, really.” Involving fans in the creative process has always been an important part of the band’s existence, says Leto. In return, a group of cult-like fans, which calls itself The Echelon, has also been formed. The fanbase encourage each other to attend the band’s shows, phone local stations to request songs, create online forums and vote for the band in official nominations. “They are our family out there,” says Leto. “The Echelon are a group of committed loyal soldiers. They are the mechanics of 30 Seconds to Mars, the inner workings.” Even Tomo Milicevic, the band’s lead guitar and keyboard player, was a fan before being officially roped in. “We were having auditions about eight years ago and he came up, looked at us and said, ‘You don’t have to look any further, I am your guitarist.’ We thought it was pretty funny,” Leto recalls. “He is a genius, and a lovely, lovely guy.” Most of the band’s videos have been directed by frontman Jared under the alias Bartholomew Cubbins. The singer, also a Hollywood actor, has starred in critically acclaimed films such as Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem For a Dream, the Brad Pitt-starrer Fight Club and the James Mangold film Girl, Interrupted.
‘We do what we do’
Mostly credited as an “alternative band”, 30 Seconds has been called everything from “emo” to “punk” to just “rock”. “We don’t really put ourselves in any genre. We do what we do, perform what we perform and I think it’s left to each individual.” Perhaps that’s why they haven’t shied away from performing an acoustic version of Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance or collaborating with hip-hop’s bad boy Kanye West? “Those two are great artists, they are unique and they are individuals in their own right. That’s what intrigued us and we thought it would just be fun to work with them.” Has 30 Seconds to Mars experienced Bieber Fever, then? “I think he is talented,” says Leto. “We were playing at the same festival in Europe and I happened to walk by where he was playing and he’s very good. He’s good at what he does. “Not many people know this, but it takes a lot of work to do what we do. It’s not very easy. There’s a lot of thought and conversation that takes place to make these things happen.” From Lady Gaga to Kanye West and Justin Bieber, the most important thing is to continue to grow, says Leto. “We need to evolve and change and never repeat ourselves, whether it’s in our music, our videos, our CDs and our live performances. That’s what we want to keep doing and I think we’ve done a pretty good job so far.”
Did you know?
30 Seconds To Mars’s latest video, Hurricane, directed by Jared Leto under the pseudonym Bartholomew Cummins, has been banned from American television networks because of its content. The band have in the past won a number of awards for their videos, including an MTV Award for Kings and Queens last year. “It’s a form of expression,” says Shannon Leto, the band’s drummer. “It is amazing to me that people are more comfortable seeing violence than they are seeing sexual expression. That is just very odd to me, very, very odd.”
Sold out
Tickets to the concert at the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, have completely sold out, organisers said. Doors to the venue open at 7pm but a special free pre-event featuring freestyle motocoss demos starts at 5.30pm at the parking lot.

- We catch up with angsty rocker Jared Leto ahead of his Dhabi gig
LA trio 30 Seconds to Mars elicit their fair share of eye-rolling from the hipper-than-thou for reasons that have little to do with music. There’s the fact that their expanded fanbase includes a sizeable adolescent element. There’s singer Jared Leto’s history as a teenage heartthrob-turned-character actor. Or maybe it’s because of wonderfully OTT mini-movie clips for tunes such as ‘From Yesterday’. Or simply because they make unashamedly expansive and windswept rock records.
But cock an ear to the band’s last album This Is War and the unprejudiced might conclude that the three-piece are closer in spirit to early U2 or even Nine Inch Nail’s The Downward Spiral than My Chemical Romance. And while Leto may have first come to prominence via his acting career – starting off in the teen drama My So-Called Life, before memorable turns in Fight Club, American Psycho and Requiem For A Dream – he also possesses a scorched earth yowl of a voice.
‘To tell you the truth, I still don’t really think I can sing,’ he says on the phone from LA . ‘I suppose I just have that part of me that refuses to not walk through it, regardless of what I think. I’m really compelled to make music, and to write songs and to sing, it’s beyond a reasonable doubt. It’s something that, if I were more rational, I’m not sure I would have continued to do all these years. Really, it’s been nothing short of compulsion. I remember when I was a kid walking home from school I would mimic the voices of some of the singers that I loved.’
What kinds of singers? ‘Oh, everyone from Robert Plant to Bono. But I’ve never had a singing lesson, it’s never been something that I’ve pursued except in my own songs. Like, I was never in a cover band, I never was in a jam band. I’ve only ever written songs.’
Despite their reputation as a teen-friendly emo band, Jared denies they fall into this bracket.
‘I always quote Andy Warhol when asked this,’ he says. ‘Labels are for cans, not for people!’
He also insists that 30 Seconds’ fan base covers a variety of demographics, with people of all ages turning out for his shows. So is it strange, as a 39-year-old man, to look out into a crowd and see middle-aged males next to adolescent girls?
‘It’s always surprising, and we all get a kick out of it. I love seeing the different types of people at the shows, and it’s not uncommon to see, like you said, a young 12-year-old boy or a 40-year-old guy. It’s a pretty disparate audience and I really enjoy that. You don’t choose your audience. Anyone has the right to listen to these songs, and when I write the song I kind of relinquish ownership of it.’
The band’s last album This Is War was a big, bold and unashamedly epic record preoccupied with themes of mortality and faith. Among the album’s innovations is the use of a mass rabble choir drawn from the ranks of the band’s fanbase, the Echelon, recorded at various so-called Summit meetings in both the corporeal and digital realm.
‘When people hear ‘Kings & Queens’ and many of the songs that have the Summit on them, it’s actually tens of thousands of people from all over the world,’ Leto explains. ‘It started as a physical location in Los Angeles, we did the first Summit at a place called The Avalon, about a thousand people showed up. It was something I’d been thinking about for a year and a half. I had most of it mapped out and experimented a bit and did some percussion, some singing, some chanting and stomping, and utilised this group as basically an instrument, and it went really well so we extended the experiment to eight other countries around the world.’
And fans from the Middle East were not excluded from the Summits, even when it was physically impossible for them to attend.
‘When we were recording, I got a Twitter message from someone in Iran who was frustrated that they couldn’t make one of the Summits, so that was the impetus for the digital version, where people could sit at home by themselves with friends and participate,’ claims Jared. ‘It was fun to do things that haven’t been done before and to try to figure out the schematics of it all and how to make it work.’
‘We didn’t have a record deal at the time, it was self-financed, and it was an intense time for us and for the rest of the world. We happened to be fighting a big battle with our label as well (Virgin sued the band for breach of contract; the matter has since been resolved) and there were some personal things that happened, a death in the family, some big life challenges. We’re not expecting anyone to feel sorry for us, these are things that happen to all of us, it’s part of what makes us better, stronger, keeps us human and gives us an opportunity to have some humility.’
So, with his new found demureness, Jared will be leading the band at Flash Forum. If you’re a fan of angst-infused rock, it’s a show you won’t want to miss. Just don’t mention the word ‘emo’.
30 Seconds to Mars perform at Flash Forum, Yas Island on March 11. Doors will open at 7pm.
