- FACE THE MUSIC: Virgin/EMI group Thirty Seconds to Mars is taking the concept of micro-marketing to a new level with the cover of their upcoming album, This Is War,
which comes out Dec. 8. The first run of the disc will be a limited edition run featuring the faces sent in by fans selected in an on-line “Faces of Mars” contest for the top 2,000 entries. There are also a number of celebs and industry ringers in the batch, including Irving Azoff and Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta as well as label execs Ron Werre, Greg Thompson, Angelica Cob-Baehler, Colin Finklestein and Bob Semanovich. Which means fans have to actually go into record stores to see if their album cover is being carried. Ingenious, right? (12/4p) - Citation :
- MARS LANDING IN U.K.: Virgin/EMI group Thirty Seconds to Mars score a rare U.K. hat trick for the band’s new album, This Is War, which comes out Dec. 8. The release hit the #1 pre-order spot this week at the country’s three main online retailers, Amazon, Play and HMV. That’s the first time the feat’s been accomplished over the pond since Florence + the Machine did it last June. (12/4a)

| 30 Seconds To Mars Waging A New Kind of War words by: Kristie Bertucci
| It’s been a long four years for 30 Seconds to Mars fans, but their yearning for some new tunes is finally over with the release of the bands third studio album, This Is War. During their absence in the music world, the band and their surroundings changed quite a bit. “A new president, being sued for $30 million, personal challenges, an economic fallout…all that contributed a great deal to the outcome of the album,” drummer Shannon Leto explains. “It’s really all of our experiences that contributed to making of the album—good and bad. If we didn’t go though those things, we wouldn’t have the album we made today.” The biggest tribulation the band faced throughout that time was their lawsuit with Virgin Records, in which the label filed a $30 million lawsuit, claiming the band refused to deliver three albums as required by its contract back in August 2008. “It was a pain in the ass,” Shannon describes. “My brother dealt with it much more closely, but for me personally, it was painful. It didn’t really hinder the recoding process, but I think it would be a different sounding album if we didn’t go through the experience. The lawsuit was later annulled in April of this year, which allowed the band to fully focus on their This Is War. Working with producers like Flood (who’ve produced for the likes of U2, Depeche Mode, and Nine Inch nails) and Steve Lillywhite, 30STM have really evolved with this new album, allowing fans to get a deeper understanding of who the band is. Best described by Shannon as “raw,” the album’s first single “Kings and Queens” really sets the tone for the rest of the album with its tidal wave of woah vocals, galloping strings and a chorus that will shake you to the core. “We wanted to greatly express the raw, honest feelings we’ve had and share them with fans,” Shannon says. “We wanted to capture just the brutal truth and I think we accomplished that by encapsulating our everyday lives.” The album is so honest that the guys used literally shared the world around them in various songs. In one song, the sound of someone washing dishes can be heard, while another one features the sound of a hawk that really lived above Shannon’s house. To get even more personal, they mobilized their fan community at the Avalon Club back in April so they’d be featured on the album. The devoted fans, which are known as The Echelon, showed up in the hundreds for an impromptu recording session dubbed “The Summit.” Fans had the chance to contribute vocals and percussion to the new record and, because the experience was so successful, the band decided to host, though not attend, eight more summits over the summer months in countries around the world, including Australia, Italy and Mexico and many more. “The Summit was my brother’s idea,” Shannon says. “We wanted to have fans participate in the album and be a part of us since we always feel strongly about incorporating their thoughts into the our music. Their clapping, chanting and vocals were just as important as our instruments for the album. We decided to take it international after my brother got Tweets from fans around the world wanting to be involved, too. It was pretty amazing in the end.” Besides fans, the new album also features Tibetan monks chanting on one sing, as well as a single with Kanye West. But the fans involvement doesn’t stop at merely their participation via the Summit; the band also wanted them to interpret the album’s title for themselves. “It can mean many things: being at war with yourself, being at war with people around you, being at war companies or what have you,” Shannon explains. “Really, it’s left up to our listeners’ interpretation while they’re listening to the record, and I think that when you’re going through change and trying to discard old ways of doing things, you can be at war of sorts with yourself; think people can relate to that. But in the end, it’s really important for people to interpret it themselves.” While he hopes fans love each and every song off the album, Shannon says his current favorites are “Night of the Hunter” for its sexiness” and “Alibi” since it’s “so stripped down and real,” but admits his favorites change all the time. Founded in 1998 by Shannon and his brother Jared, 30 STM first started as a small family project, but has now evolved into phenomenal act with massive followings. “I would have never thought our songs would be on the radio,” Shannon says about the band’s success. “I was just compelled to make music and doing it just because. When people start gravitating toward your music, it’s an amazing that that can’t really be described. It’s such a great feeling when you play in front of people and you see their faces as they sing back the songs to you and you feel their energy—there’s nothing else that really compares to that.” Focused on This Is War and its world tour next year, Shannon isn’t sure when the next 30STM album will come out, but knows that his holds a lot more opportunities of sharing his and the band’s experiences with the world and their devoted Echelon fans.

Live review: 30 Seconds to Mars @ the Ogden Theatre
Jared Leto and 30 Seconds to Mars played a fan-centric show at the Ogden Theatre on Wednesday. Photo by Jennifer Cohen. Two days into their first American tour in over two years, 30 Seconds to Mars took fans on a fantastic journey through their three-album history, playing to a sold-out crowd at the Ogden last night. Four years after “A Beautiful Lie,” their sophomore album, went multi-platinum, 30 STM is back on tour to support their upcoming album, “This is War,” set to drop on December 8. View a full photo gallery of this concert here. Opening the night with “A Beautiful Lie,” 30 Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto, (vocals, guitar), Shannon Leto, (drums) and Tomo Milicevic, (guitar), treated fans to an energetic performance, belting out songs from their self-titled debut album, as well as “A Beautiful Lie,” and two from their soon-to-be released album, “This is War.” Singing crowd favorites, “Attack,” “From Yesterday” and “Battle of One,” the emotive singer didn’t disappoint. Leto’s vocals were clean and strong, reaching impressive ranges effortlessly. Referring to Colorado, Leto fired up the crowd saying, “Colorado is one of my favorite places on the planet… this place is the f***in’ s**t!” He bravely entered the pool of screaming fans, shouting, “Scream your f***in’ asses off!” They did, and suddenly Leto hovered above the crowd as if lifted by its’ collective energy. Despite their apparent dire thirst, “My god, is it always this dry in Denver? You never have spit or snot!” the band played a tireless show, and there was no lack of energy as Milicevic continuously jumped around the stage. Giving Milicevic and brother Shannon a water break, Leto took down the lights, and sat down for a mellow acoustic version of “Capricorn.” He then went into a ballad-esque rendition of “The Kill,” only to stop half way, rousing the crowds’ energy and curiosity. The rest of the band came back, adequately hydrated, and stepped up “The Kill” with the hard-driving riffs we’re used to hearing. I have to take a moment here to address what Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard recently said about 30 STM, that “Leto is a professional actor, and is therefore acting the part of a singer, and that’s what people embrace.” Indeed, Leto is a professional actor. He has found success in more than one arena. It’s called talent. Embrace that, DCC. Anyway: from their inception, 30 STM has always been generous with their fans, providing a meet and greet after every concert. Wednesday was no exception. Every person who lined up was met with actual eye contact and a sincere thank you. The respect between the fans and the band was palpable. If the two tracks they played tonight are indicators of what is to come on Dec. 8, “This is War” will secure the already stable home among fans and critics alike. | Une interview de Tomo ! : SOURCE - Citation :
- It’s attempted several times to contact 30 Seconds To Mars guitarist Tomo Milicevic for our interview, while on the other end the epic sound of This Is War being rehearsed for a run of live shows completely drowns the ringing.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting,” he finally apologises. “I left my phone on the top of my amp and with how loud we are, it made it impossible to hear it. I even set an alarm for myself.”
30 Seconds to Mars have a hell of a challenge in front of them. “We don’t make live albums; we make studio albums and then we play them live,” Milicevic laughs. “This record we really went for it. To play it live, it’s going to be a lot of work. But that’s okay, we’re not afraid of that. We haven’t played live in years. So we’re rehearsing like crazy now and getting back into that rhythm.”
With a talent like Jared Leto fronting the band, there really is nothing to fear. Or is there? “I didn’t really want to release this information…but he’s actually an alien,” Milicevic laughs. “That’s why he’s so damn good at everything! He’s not a human being!”
The short-film like clip for lead single From Yesterday saw 30 Seconds to Mars become the first ever American band to make a music video-clip in the People’s Republic of China.
“I don’t want to sound like a cocky prick but our videos really are beautiful,” says Milicevic. “I love watching them. That’s hats off to Jared and his big thinking and ability to pull that stuff off. He’s obviously very talented on the film side of things, does really great work and doesn’t do bullshit movies. I think that’s a testament to his artistic side. He has so many opportunities to make so much money and he passes that up for art.”
But what fans might not know is Jared’s brother and bandmate Shannon, according to Milicevic, is just as gifted in making melody.
“He’s the drummer, so people never think about the drummer being a melodic person. But those two guys have this unbelievable knack for creative melody. When you’re writing a song, everything, everything comes second to the melody.
“There’s a song on the album called L490 that Shannon wrote and played all the instruments on. A lot of people don’t know that he can do that. We don’t really showcase that stuff live. The good think about 30 Seconds to Mars is that nobody will fight for ego. The best piece of music wins.”
And that music has been reaching far and wide. “We’re building this family of friends and weirdos that come to our shows. We have the coolest and equally weirdest audience. So we wanted to capture that spirit and energy that we have at our performances on the album.”
Enter ‘The Summit’ – another idea made possible by Leto. “We booked this venue in LA called the Avalon Club – which is a 12,000-14,000 seat venue – and we decided to turn that place into a giant recording studio. People turned up from all over the world. Jared was basically conducting the crowd like an orchestra. It was a pretty magical experience to be a part of.”
They then went on to conduct global summits around the world, which still wasn’t enough. “People from countries who didn’t get to participate were Twittering. I think Jared got this Twitter from a guy in Iran. He was like, ‘Man, I really wish I could have participated in The Summit but I live in Iran and there wasn’t a way for me to do it.’ That’s when the digital summit came to life.”
“The thing that is really cool is every single piece of audio that was submitted, literally every single piece, is on the album,” he continues. “So to anyone who participated in any form of The Summit, just know that you are on the album.”
Not many artists can boast the voice of the world as their instrument. It sounds well worth the effort. “We work 20 hours a day, seven days a week. I personally believe that’s the only way that you can achieve anything that’s great. Again, I don’t want to sound like I’m tooting my own horn or our own horn, but I know we’ve put a lot of time into this and I hope that it shows in the music.”

Search and Destroy :
Stranger in a strange land:
