Sur le tournage de Kings and Queens, le premier single du prochain album This is War, Jared Leto qui réalise et apparaît également dans le clip au côté des autres membres du groupe, est resté fidèle au travail qu'ils ont entrepris jusque là en faisant des "courts métrages". Nous sommes aussi allés en Artic (A Beautiful Lie), du coup, faire cette vidéo était bien plus simple... Mais elle a été également un challenge. D'une certaine manière, c'était tout aussi énorme".
Le groupe a provoqué le chaos pour beaucoup d'automobilistes avec les rues, les tunnels et les ponts barrés pour quelques nuits (sans compter une nuit supplémentaire à cause d'une pluie inattendue) afin de tourner dans des lieux iconiques de Los Angeles tels que Hollywood Boulevard et la jetée de Santa Monica. Mais le leader a admis que ça valait vraiment le coup.
"Les images que nous avons visionnées jusque là sont incroyables et c'est grâce à la participation des fans", Jared dit à K!. "Nous avons été stupéfait par le nombre de personnes présentes. Les attitudes positives, les contributions créatives et l'amusement étaient de mise.
Du départ sur le pont jusqu'au centre ville, nous savions que nous vivions une aventure. C'était une incroyable expérience".
Kings and Queens sort le 29 novembre avec Virgin. L'album This is War suit le 7 décembre. Le groupe jouera à Londres le 16 Novembre.

A part en ayant l'album entre les mains, je vois pas comment on pourrait avoir plus de nouveautés qu'actuellement...
On a passé longtemps à raler comme quoi ils faisaient abstraction du 1er album pendant l'ère ABL, on va pas se plaindre s'ils ne reproduisent pas le même schéma cette fois ci.^^

j'aime les gens qui râlent aujourd'hui pour avoir de la nouveauté comme j'aime les gens qui râlent d'attendre de les voir en concert... quand je pense à ceux et celles qui ont attendu des années pour qu'on parle du groupe ou pour les voir... ça me fait doucement rigoler...
soyez patient les gens, nous n'avons jamais eu autant d'infos ni de news qu'en ce moment... et même quand il n'y avait pas ou peu d'actu, il y avait quelque chose... alors cool raoul...

En même temps c'est un peu quand même avec cet album que la plupart des gens ont connu le groupe et ABL est disque de Platine c'est pas rien!!

Un article intéressant du LA times qui revient sur le procès avec EMI.

On y apprend notamment que Jared a reçu un courrier (manuscrit) de soutien de l'actrice américaine Olivia de Havilland qui aurait vécu une situation similaire avec son contrat avec la Warner Bros, d'où la loi qui en a découlé et qui porte son nom. Et Jared dit su'il s'est servi de cette même loi pour résoudre leur procès (sans vouloir pour autant s'étendre sur le sujet).
L'actrice réside à Paris et Jared a dit qu'il irait lui dire bonjour lors de sa visite parisienne.

Le producteur Flood (Mark Ellis de son vrai nom) parle également des jours sombres lors de la création de l'album en studio à cause du procès qui planait au dessus de 30stm.
Il (Flood)dit qu'"un peu de désespoir et de dépression sont utiles pour galvaniser les artistes, mais j'ai vraiment eu le sentiment que je devais les aider à se relever de ça. Jared avait les pires problèmes de dos en studio dus au stress physique de devoir résoudre le procès auquel était confronté le groupe"

Voilà sinon ça parle un peu de TIW, des summits, de la présence de Kanye sur l'album, du clip de K&Q tourné à LA, enfin tout ce qu'on sait à peu près déjà...

A few weeks ago, Jared Leto got a letter in
the mail. It was addressed to the 30 Seconds to Mars singer in formal,
feminine script and arrived on thick, azure-colored paper. The return
address was the real surprise, however -- the Paris home of Olivia de
Havilland, the "Gone With the Wind" actress who in a roundabout way
helped save the band's career.

Last year,
the group was staring down a $30-million lawsuit from its parent label,
EMI, over future albums the label claimed the band owed the company.
But a contract case involving De Havilland decades ago seemed to offer
legal precedent for a way out.

"The California Appeals Court
ruled that no service contract in California is valid after seven
years, and it became known as the 'De Havilland law' after she used it
to get out of her contract with Warner Bros.," Leto said. "We used the
same statute to resolve our lawsuit."

Because of her association
with that law, Leto had reached out to De Havilland to interview her
for an as yet unreleased documentary he was filming about the making of
the album. She declined to participate, but she agreed to meet with him
and the two remained in touch -- though Leto says he was taken aback
when he received her handwritten missive.

He hadn't expected her to take the time to send a the note, he said. "I'm going to visit her in Paris to thank her," Leto said.

In the back room of the band's new mixed-use promotional space on Melrose
Avenue, Leto sounds positively zen, even downright beatific about an Old Hollywood star unwittingly helping to rescue him from within today's flailing major-label system. He greets guests with vigorous hugs, and he sings prospective new verses between conversations the way other people might take smoke breaks.

The band's new album, "This Is War," out Dec. 8, is decidedly more combative. Such songs as "Night of the Hunter" and "Hurricane" brim with sinister electronics
and lyrics such as "Tell me, would you kill to prove you're right?" The suggestion is one of malevolent forces both acting on the band and roiling within it.

Leto is reluctant to discuss any particulars of the lawsuit, which ended with 30 Seconds to Mars back under the EMIlabel umbrella. After the suit's resolution in April, Nick Gatfield,EMI Music's president of A&R labels for North America and the
United Kingdom, gave an official statement on the suit.

"We are thrilled to have set aside our differences and signed a new agreement
with 30 Seconds to Mars," he said. "Our relationship has been extremely
rewarding and successful, and we're eager to move forward and put our
global team to work on the brilliant new album they are recording with
[producer] Flood."

The experience still left Leto with a disconnect about how otherwise friendly, individual faces can quickly turn ugly when business dealings are involved. "The idea of a
corporation is a tricky one. It's a shell for the people within it, and though we've lost a lot of our supporters at EMI from layoffs, there are still mostly good people there," he said.

That sense of confusion and disappointment inform the album's tone. Yet the
collection is also the most confident-sounding thing the band has done.
It owes a great deal to producer Mark Ellis, who under the name Flood
has helmed albums by U2, Depeche Mode and the Killers. He said the
stress of the suit made the "This Is War" sessions an often physical trial for the band.

"There were so many dark days," Ellis said. "A bit of hopelessness and depression are useful in galvanizing artists, but I feel like I really had to help lift them out of it.
Jared had the worst back problems in the studio from the physical
stress of holding up the band under the lawsuit."

Ellis' sure production helped the musicians break out of their wall-of-guitars
contemporary rock sound (there's even a vocal cameo from Kanye West on
"Hurricane").

They also recalibrated their sense of what -- and who -- was truly important to them. One of the most prominent effects on the album is a catalog of found sounds recorded at various "summits," where fans came to sing hooks en masse at venues including
the Avalon in Hollywood.

Leto, whose acting credits include"Panic Room" and "Requiem for a Dream," has long based 30 Seconds to Mars in Los Angeles but set its music videos in such places as
Beijing's Forbidden City and at the Arctic Circle.

Recording the album at Leto's home just north of the Hollywood Hills brought the
band's psychology closer to L.A. The video for "War's" first single, "Kings and Queens," centers on L.A.'s bicycling community.

It follows Leto, (his brother and) drummer Shannon Leto and guitarist Tomo
Milicevic as they lead a gang of bikers across the L.A. River through
Hollywood to the Santa Monica Pier. The raging wildfires and white
stallion that joins them suggest the band hasn't lost its taste for the
epic. But Leto is carving out a niche for the group amid the whirlwind.

"So much of this album was about reclaiming public space for art," Leto
said. "We shut down Hollywood Boulevard. We shut down the Santa Monica
Pier. It was so wonderful to own both sides of the road. We tried to
close down the freeway, but that's a lot harder to do than we thought."

Toutes ces questions financières étaient très pénibles et nous sommes tous soulagés d'avoir trouvé un accord satisfaisant pour tout le monde. Ces dernières années, la situation était devenue si tendue qu'enregistrer ce nouvel album s'est avéré très thérapeutique. Nous n'avions plus de maison de disques à l'époque, mais nous pouvions compter les uns sur les autres. C'était nous contre le reste du monde. Nous avions l'impression de lutter pour notre survie et nous étions prêts à nous dépasser pour arriver au bout de l'enregistrement. Sur le mur du studio, j'avais écrit cette phrase : « tuez-vous à la tâche pour y arriver » Nous étions motivés comme jamais. Avec cet album, nous avons voulu nous réinventer et nous redécouvrir.

Que penses-tu du résultat final ?
Je suis à la fois terrifié par la sortie prochaine de This Is War et fou de joie. Mais je suis sûr d'une chose, cet album est l'expression de ce que nous avons de meilleur au fond de nous. Nous y avons mis nos tripes. Nous nous sommes livrés corps et âme et j'espère juste que le public aimera ce que nous avons voulu lui donner. C'est ce qui me fait peur au fond. Nous nous sommes mis à nu et si les fans nous rejettent après ça, ce sera d'autant plus pénible.

L'atmosphère de cet album est très sombre, le groupe est-il toujours aussi pessimiste ?
La situation où nous nous trouvions au moment de l'enregistrement n'était pas franchement drôle et cela a forcément influencé nos compositions. Cependant, au-delà de cela, on peut dire que certains groupes font de la musique pour s'amuser et distraire le public, mais ce n'est pas notre cas. Nous prenons notre musique très au sérieux et c'est la raison pour laquelle nous sommes si passionnés.

Tu t'es aussi impliqué dans la réalisation du premier extrait de l'album, le single intitulé Kings and Queens.
Oui, j'avais envie de me lancer dans la réalisation et nous avons filmé la vidéo de nuit dans les rues de Los Angeles. C'était génial de filmer ces immenses rues vides alors qu'elles sont d'habitude bouillonnantes d'activité. Le clip dure 9 minutes et c'est carrément un court-métrage. Nous adorons nous dépasser et tourner des clips inattendus. Par le passé, nous étions allés filmer en Chine, où nous avions réalisé un clip de 14 minutes pour le titre From Yesterday. Ensuite, nous sommes allés dans l'Arctique nous asseoir sur des glaciers pour illustrer la chanson A beautiful Lie. Cette fois, je me suis dit que si nous allions encore dans un pays exotique, on allait nous confondre avec une pub pour une agence de voyages ! C'est pourquoi nous avons choisi de filmer à Los Angeles, là où nous vivons. Ce clip, c'est un peu notre déclaration d'amour à cette ville.

Le groupe va se produire à Paris. A quoi peuvent s'attendre les fans français ?
En concert, nous sommes un groupe très énergique qui instaure une atmosphère particulière sur scène. La comparaison que j'utilise toujours, c'est un mélange entre l'énergie des Sex Pistols et le côté grandiloquent des Pink Floyd. Mais nous sommes aussi un groupe où la spontanéité a une grande importance. Quand nous montons sur scène, nous ne savons jamais exactement ce qui va se passer. Il n'y a rien de plus ennuyeux que ces performances où tout est contrôlé. Je trouve que les groupes de rock qui parviennent à créer une sorte d'état de grâce par la seule force de leurs chansons sont bien plus intéressants que ceux qui dépensent tout leur argent en effets pyrotechniques.

Quelles sont tes sources d'inspirations quand tu te produis sur scène ?
J'essaie toujours de proposer quelque chose de différent. Quand j'étais plus jeune, j'ai été très marqué par les concerts auxquels ma mère m'emmenait : grâce à elle, j'ai vu Led Zeppelin et les Pink Floyd et leurs shows ont littéralement changé ma vie et ma perception du monde.

Tu sembles tellement impliqué dans la vie du groupe qu'on peut se demander si ta carrière d'acteur n'est pas terminée...
je ne dirais pas que ma carrière de comédien est finie. Mais pour le moment, je n'ai pas accepté de nouveau rôle parce que je veux avoir du temps pour partir en tournée et promouvoir l'album. Ce groupe, c'est une partie importante de ma vie, pas quelque chose que je fais en dilettante en attendant mieux. Cela dit, si vous voulez me voir au cinéma, je suis actuellement à l'affiche de Mr Nobody, un film dans lequel je me suis également beaucoup investi. Je ne sais pas faire les choses à moitié.

Our magazine is called defy unlearn because we strive to defy labels
and want people to “unlearn” what they have been taught. What does
“defy unlearn” mean to you?
Matt:
I think it kind of goes along with the lines of what you said. It could
even be translated to a college education; that the best students are
the ones who-

just got off the bus and ran in front of it and crossed the street
without looking.
Bus driver: Don’t you ever run in front of my bus again!
Shannon: Yeah!
Matt: You could get hurt.
Shannon (to the kid): Hey, does she always yell at you?

Matt: You’re a trouble maker! I’ve got my eye on you.
Shannon: Ahhh defy unlearn (gesturing to the boy)…
Matt:
Defy unlearn, yes… Especially in today’s day and age when there is so
much information to take in, I think it’s inevitable to take what you
want and leave the rest. Even with a college education and the
Internet, there is so much information to take in. I think one of my
teachers said it to me best: “Forget everything you’ve ever learned
here”. At first I didn’t understand that. What does that mean, “forget
everything I learned?” Then what did I take away from this experience?
Then a few years down the road it made sense to me, take it and adapt
it to your own personal experiences. Now the defy part, that kind of
goes without saying, there are so many forms of that, there’s anarchy,
there’s passive aggressive resistance (laughing), there’s many forms of
that. I think we all definitely have some form of defiance in us,
always fighting against something, always defying something.
Shannon:
If something is force fed to you, like “here you have to do that”…and
I’m an artist, I’m going to defy against that, most definitely because
of an artist’s freedom of speech to me…to us, it means a lot.
Matt: No one wants to be forced fed.
Shannon:
Right, but a lot of people are, this days and age, in the music world
especially and they are accepting of it, but in our world, in 30
Seconds to Mars, we want to do our own thing and we want the freedom to
do that and that’s what I have to say.

Carina: When doing interviews is there a question you hate being asked?
Shannon: That one.
Carina: Are you serious?
Matt: Yeah.
Laughter.
Carina: How about a question you wish someone would ask you? Something you want to talk about, but don’t get asked.
Shannon: That one.
Laughter.
Shannon: As long as it’s about the music.
Matt: Exactly.

Carina: Having said that, what kind of role did music play in your life when you were growing up?
Matt:
For me, music was an escape from the mundane existence that every kid
goes through, going to school, going to work, I’d go home, put my
headphones on, put a record on and it would take me to a different
place, out of myself, somewhere else, listening to people who I felt I
connected with, people that knew what I was going through, word for
word and put it in a song.
Shannon:
I agree with Matt, definitely escape and exploration to another way of
thinking, through music, not just the lyrics, but through the sounds,
the melodies and the notes, without a doubt I agree with Matt.
Matt:
It’s amazing, I can still listen to a song today and it will take me
right back to when I was 13 years old. I’ll put on Metallica’s “Master
of Puppets” and I feel insecure and I don’t want to go to school.
(laughing)

Carina: What kind of music are you listening to now, which bands?
Shannon: We listen to everything, different types, anything from the Used to….What’s another one?
Matt: Louder milk.
Shannon: We like listening to new bands…
Matt: Maiden
Shannon: Yeah, we’ll pop in Iron Maiden, Metallica…
Matt: Brian Eno
Shannon: Also a lot U2.
Carina: Old U2?
Shannon: Yeah
Carina: Which of your songs would you like to see a cover version of and who would you like to see do it?
Shannon: hmm, let the person who wants to do it pick that, I wouldn’t know.

Matt: Yeah…

Carina: OK, cool. Have you started working on your next
album? I read something that mentioned when you guys are practicing
that you have started messing around and doing some stuff. Can you tell
us anything about it?
Matt:
Yeah, when we do sound check, we bounce around a lot of ideas, some of
it materializes into something that we can call a song, but right now
our focus is on this tour and this record, but there is some stuff in
the works right now.
Carina: What about some songs that didn’t make it on this album?
Shannon: They’ll be used in other areas.
Carina: Can you tell me one thing that makes a really good audience?
Matt:
Audience participation, there’s nothing better than seeing a crowd
singing along. Last night we played a show and the crowd knew almost
every single word to every single song, it was the best feeling. Just
to watch them get so involved and they’re so energetic, that we feed
off them, I really do.
Shannon: And when girls pull up their shirts.
Matt: Yeah.
Laughter.
Carina: Do they really do that?
Matt: No.
More laughter.
Shannon: Well, it does happen.
Carina: I saw a lot of that at the Korn show I photographed, underage boobs too.
Shannon: You weren’t one of them, were you?
Carina: umm, no. OK, so you’ve played outdoor festivals, actually, the first time I saw you was in Nashville-
Matt: River Stages! That was the last show from the Puddle of Mudd tour.
Carina:
Yes! I was so excited because all I had were MP3’s of you guys and I
got my first sampler from you after your set. Anyhow, you’ve played
outdoor festivals, huge areas and intimate clubs…and I’ve had the
chance to hear some acoustic stuff as well. What are some pluses and
minuses of each?
Shannon:
There are great things about doing both big and small venues. With big
venues, you get to experience your music with a lot of other people,
show your music to people in a wider range, whereas in a smaller venue,
it’s much more intimate, people are closer to you, so they’re both
great.
Carina:
You have very devoted fans and have had a huge following well before
your first CD came out. What’s the coolest thing a fan has ever done
that impressed you? If there is one you can think of that is.
Matt: I wouldn’t say it’s any one thing.
Shannon:
Right, but you know what’s really cool? When they start following you
from place to place, the dedication… and when they start making shirts…
Matt: Yeah, it’s very motivating.
Shannon:hats…
Matt:scarves…
Shannon:
ties…It’s just awesome. Thirty Seconds to Mars, like we’ve said before,
is a huge art project, people get to express themselves in many ways
and that’s what we’ve always wanted and that’s what we did growing up.
It’s great that people are latching on to that and doing it for
themselves.
Matt:
So they feel they’re part of it which is something I know I always
wanted as a kid; I wanted to feel that I was part of it, part of the
band, and I think that’s what we’re offering and people are responding
to it. It’s a great feeling that kids are so proactive, exciting and
involved.
Carina:
You guys seem to be a big supporter of people making their own
interpretations of your music. Have there been any interpretations of
your music that fans have been able to share with you that really
impressed you or touched you in some way?
Shannon: Wow, there have been so many, that I don’t know which one I would choose. They all mean something different.
Matt:
It’s always nice when you hear someone talk about how a certain song
got them through a tough time in their life and when you hear something
like that, there is a connection because we were all their before, we
were going through a rough time in our lives and one record or a couple
of records got us through it.
Shannon:
And on the other side of that, is a celebration, like after graduation,
they are all playing our music, jumping around and having fun.
Carina:
OK, well I’ve read and seen interviews with you, the last one being on
MTV2 when you hosted and the VJ said “30 Seconds FROM mars”…

Laughter.
Matt: And we totally called her on that.
Carina: Yeah, well you guys have a great sense of humor and so I want to ask you some silly and funny questions.
Matt: Sure!
Shannon: Go for it!
Carina:
OK, if Ben & Jerry made an ice cream in your honor and allowed you
to create and name it, what would it be called and what would be in it?
Shannon: hmmm, Matt what would it be?
Laughter.
Matt: I could think of totally a generic one, but I don’t want to be so obvious about it, like with Mars bars..ah, it’s too boring.
Shannon: I can think of a sexual one.
Matt: I can think on many different levels…what about wheat grass?
Shannon: We can call it scrumdillyuptious…try writing that.
Laughter.
Carina: Well tell me what’s in it.
Shannon: It’s a secret recipe.

Carina: Speaking of foreign languages, your fans and specifically, echelon members want to know, when are you going to tour Europe?
Shannon: We’re going in the New Year.
Carina: Really? I will be there in April. Will you be there then?
Matt: Hmmm, January, February, March, April…yeah I think so, sounds about right.
Carina: Awesome! They will love to hear that! So, what’s the last book you read ?
Matt:
There’s a book I’m reading now about the scandal and what’s going on
with the Catholic Church in Boston and I just finished Harry Potter and
the Chamber of Secrets.
Shannon: Last book I read is Steven King’s “Everything’s Eventual: 14 Dark Tales.
Matt: And the bible.
Shannon: Yup, just finished the bible, it took me about an hour.
Laughter.
Carina: OK, can you explain it to me then?
Shannon: Hah! Ummmm no. Absolutely not.
Laughter.
Matt: Didn’t understand a word.
Shannon: No.
Carina: Lastly, boxers or briefs?
Matt: Freeball!
Shannon: Neither…freeballin’!
More laughter.
Carina:
OK, on to tour questions, think back to the beginning of the Sevendust
tour, or a previous one if it’s easier, and tell me about a comedic
moment.
Shannon:
Well, I was playing drums, now this was on the first tour, and I get
real excited when I play and sometimes I lose myself and I don’t really
know where I am. It’s like when you’re driving and you get to your
point of destination but you don’t know how you got there. Anyhow, I
was playing and stood up and then I went to sit down but I fell off the
chair and landed on the floor looking at my drum tech and we laughed
our asses off but no one else really saw.
Matt: I have a tendency to fall on stage a lot.
Carina: Yeah, I remember you did in Connecticut on the Incubus tour.
Laughter.
Matt: Heh, yeah, I remember… Actually, I got some x-rays back, but I’m ok. It’s just fluid in my elbow, it’s not broken.
Carina: Thank goodness! …How about a moment of perfection or beauty?
Matt:
I get passing moments of that, like when we’re on stage and something
connects and you can’t describe it but you can feel it, especially when
it’s with each other, that’s beauty to me.
Carina: How about a moment of ugliness?
Matt: Me, when I wake up in the morning.
Shannon: I got one, him when he wakes up in the morning.
Laughter.
Carina: How about a cliché?
Shannon: Well I was walking on a tour bus once but I’m not going to say which one, and I saw a groupie going down on a guy.
Matt: The rock star cliché, sex, drugs and rock and roll.
Carina: What about a moment of gratitude?
Matt:
Every night there’s a moment of gratitude, I know it sounds like a
cliché in itself, but there’s immense gratitude to all those people,
whether it’s 50 or 5000 people, our audience and fans.
Carina: Any final words?
Shannon: We love you all! And we’ll be coming to France in Spring 2003!

Matt: Merci Beaucoup!
Laughter.
