Impossible que vous ayez raté l’acteur/chanteur/réalisateur dans
la pub du parfum Just Different d’Hugo Boss. Nouvellement égérie beauté,
le vilain petit canard du ciné est en promo parisienne avec son groupe
de rock 30 Seconds to Mars. À l’hôtel Costes, Jared mâche des fraises en
même temps qu’il répond aux questions, puis attrape sa guitare et décide de l’accorder. Quand Jared Leto s’ennuie, il nous le fait savoir… Par Marion Renard

Je croyais que vous n’aviez plus de label, suite au procès intenté par votre maison de disques en 2008… C’est
vrai que nous avons eu une grosse dispute avec EMI, avec poursuite
judiciaire à hauteur de 30 millions de dollars. C’était important de se
battre, mais c’est terminé. Nous avons un nouveau contrat avec eux et
une totale liberté pour sortir des albums quand on en a envie.

Le prochain est donc prévu pour quand ?
Je ne sais pas [en français dans le texte, ndlr]. Nous sommes en tournée jusqu’à décembre, et rien n’est planifié.

Il paraît que vous voulez mettre le groupe en stand-by pendant dix ans pour retrouver l’inspiration, c’est vrai ?
Je
devrais, non ? Ce serait intéressant… Pendant les dix prochaines
années, je ne compte pas parler mais juste écouter, ça peut être
marrant, non ? Juste être à l’écoute de tout le monde. Je crois que je
peux le faire, oui.

C’était seulement une rumeur alors ?
Il faut juste prendre en compte ce que le futur nous réserve. On verra.

On vous a vu dernièrement dans l’excellent « Mr. Nobody » de Jaco van Dormael. Pensez-vous reprendre votre carrière d’acteur ?Je
ne sais pas, il faudrait une opportunité spéciale, quelque chose qui en
vaut la peine. Pour le moment, je n’ai pas le temps pour tourner dans
un film.

Que voulez vous dire par « spéciale » ?Qui intrigue. Je ne sais pas, je n’ai rien de prévu mais si c’était le cas, ça devra être un rôle vraiment très intéressant.

Vous refusez beaucoup de propositions de film ?Oui,
mais je dis non car je ne suis pas libre, surtout avec les tournées. Je
ne prends même pas la peine de les prendre en considération…

La scène hollywoodienne ne semble pas vous manquer ! Certainement pas ! Qu’allez-vous faire alors de votre temps libre ?J’aimerais lancer une nouvelle religion.

Vous voulez devenir Jésus ?Non, j’ai trouvé mon travail. C’est d’être un serviteur, d’aider les autres, le mieux possible, en…[Il
entend un morceau de Kate Bush, décide de la reprendre à la guitare, et
donc ne répond pas à la question, 5 minutes passent…]Pour le moment, je me concentre sur mon présent mais on verra bien ce que me réserve le futur.

Pourquoi
ressortir « This Is War », votre troisième album d’abord publié en
2009, en y ajoutant ces trois reprises de Lady Gaga, Kanye West et Daft
Punk ?La radio anglaise, Radio
One, nous a demandés de faire une reprise d’un groupe pop, on a choisi
« Bad Romance », c’était marrant. Je pense que Lady Gaga est une
personne intéressante, une travailleuse, une bonne musicienne, j’aime
bien ce qu’elle fait.

Et Daft Punk, vous aimeriez un jour collaborer avec eux ? Oui, vraiment, je trouve qu’ils ont du talent, leurs chansons sont fantastiques !

Un mot sur le morceau « Hurricane » en duo avec Kanye West ?C’était
une bonne expérience, avec beaucoup de travail pour un bon rendu. Parce
que c’est un rappeur et moi je suis chanteur donc on devait trouver un
juste milieu pour que ce soit crédible. Il est vraiment très sympa, nous
avons passé un bon moment.

Vous réalisez vos
vidéos sous le pseudo de Bartholomew Cubbins pour 30 Seconds To Mars,
n’avez-vous pas envie de proposer vos talents à d’autres artistes ?Des
groupes m’ont déjà demandé mais je ne peux pas dire oui car je n’ai
vraiment pas le temps de le faire. Kanye m’a aussi demandé de faire une
vidéo pour lui mais le projet ne s’est pas fait au final.

On vous a vu récemment sur le blog de Terry Richardson ([Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] c’est votre nouveau pote de soirée ? C’est
avant tout mon ami, il est d’ailleurs à Paris en moment, je le vois ce
soir. C’est quelqu’un de top, je le connais depuis cinq ans maintenant.
On fait des photos tout le temps ensemble.

Vous
nous receviez hier en costume à Amsterdam en tant que nouvelle image du
parfum Hugo Boss, aujourd’hui, vous êtes très casual/streetwear… Vous
êtes comment au naturel ? J’aime juste être moi-même, confortable, easy…

Et ça vous plaît ce nouveau rôle d’égérie pour un parfum ? C’est marrant, différent comme expérience…

Pourquoi pensez-vous que Hugo Boss vous a choisi ? Je
n’en sais foutrement rien (rires) ! A l’origine, je ne suis pas fan de
parfum. Même si, tout petits, mon grand-père nous avait fait cadeau, à
moi et mon frère, d’un parfum Brut de Fabergé… ce qui ne voulait rien
dire à cet âge ! Mais ça me fait plaisir qu’on me l’ai demandé, je ne
vais pas dire le contraire.

Quel est votre secret pour avoir l’air si jeune ?Je bois le sang des jeunes filles…

That's true, we had a big fight with EMI, with a lawsuit in the amount of 30 million dollars. It was important to fight, but it's over. We've got a new contract with them and a complete freedom to make records when we want to.

So, the next is expected for when ?
Je ne sais pas. We are touring until December, and nothing is planned.

Is that true that you want to put the group in stand by for 10 years to get inspiration ?
I should, no ? It would be interesting... During the next 10 years, I will never talk, just listen, it would be fun, no ? Just be listening to everyone. I think I can do it, yeah.

It was just a rumor so ?
We just have to take into consideration what future holds for us. We will see.

Lately, we saw you in the excellent "Mr. Nobody" of Jaco Van Dormael. Do you think of return to your actor carreer ?
I don't know, it has to be a special opportunity, something that is worth. For the moment, I don't have time to make a movie.

What do you want to say by "special" ?
That intrigue. I don't know, I plan nothing but if so, it should be a really interesting role.

Do you refuse a lot of propositions for movies ?
Yes, but I say no because I'm not free, especially with the tour. I don't even take time to get it into consideration.

Hollywood don't seems to miss you ?
Certainly not !

What will you do of your freetime ?
I would like to start a new religion.

Do you want to become Jesus ?
No, I found my work. It's to be a servant, help the others, the best as possible, doing...[He hears a Kate Bush song, and decides to do it at the guitar, so he doesn't answer the question. 5 minutes pass...] For the moment, I focus on my present but we will see what future holds for me.

English Radio, Radio One, asked us to cover a pop group, we chose "Bad Romance", it was fun. I think Lady Gaga is an interesting person, a worker, a good musician, I like what she does.

What about Daft Punk, would you want to work in with them ?
Yes, really, I find they've got talent, their songs are amazing !!

A word about the song "Hurricane", duet with Kanye West ?
It was a good experience, with a lot of work for a good rendering. Because he is a rapper and I'm a singer we had to find a compromise to make it credible. He is very nice, we had a good time.

You direct your videos with the nickname Bartholomew Cubbins for 30 seconds to mars, don't you want to offer your talent to other artists ?
Some bands already asked me, but I can't say yes because I really don't have time to do it. Kanye asked me to make a video for him but in the end we didn't make the plan.

We saw you recently on Terry Richardson's blog, is he your new party friends ?
He is my friend first, he is actually in Paris, I will see him tonight. It's someone amazing, I have known him for 5 years. We make photos together everytime.

You met us yesterday wearing a suit in Amsterdam as the new face of Hugo Boss' fragrance, today, you're very casual/streetwear, how are you in natural ?
I like to be just myself, comfortable, easy...

Does it please you, this role of new face of perfume ?
it's funny, a different experience...

Why do you think Hugo Boss chose you ?
I don't have any fucking idea (laugh) !! Originally, I'm not a big fan of perfume. Even if, when we were young, my grand father gave us a gift, to my brother and I, a fragrance Brut of Fabergé. That has got any sense at this age. But that made me pleasure to be asked, I don't deny it.

What's your secret to look so young ?
Drink young girls' blood.
