Interview with 30 Seconds To Mars’ Shannon Leto

Twelve years and three albums later, 30 Seconds To Mars has solidified themselves in the music industry as musically dynamic and a band that fans all over the world connect with on many levels. StarShine’s editor-in-chief, Sandy Lo had the chance to speak with founding member Shannon Leto a couple of weeks ago to discuss the band’s message and their current Into The Wild Tour.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Hi Shannon. How are you today?
Shannon Leto (30 Seconds To Mars): Good. How are you Sandy?


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): I’m doing very well. Thanks for speaking with me.
Shannon Leto: Of course.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): How’s everything going with the tour?
Shannon Leto: It’s going really good. It’s our third show with this tour. We haven’t played in America in three years. It’s exciting to be sharing this album with our country.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): How is it different playing for American fans than the rest of the world?
Shannon Leto: It feels like home, ya know? It just feels comfortable. First of all, we all speak the same language, but the energy is really amazing. There’s nothing like playing for your home country. It’s hard to explain. The energy is just different–more rowdier, just more excitement.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): I’m sure that gives you more adrenaline.
Shannon Leto: Absolutely, I feed off that–the energy of the crowd.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Is there a song that still remains a fan favorite when you guys perform?
Shannon Leto: “The Kill”. People love “The Kill”. “A Beautiful Lie”, “From Yesterday”. And this new album people are responding a lot to “This Is War”, our new single that’s out now. “Kings and Queens”. “The Kill” is always the crowd favorite, it will always be, you know?


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Yeah. I put it on every mix CD that I make. [laughs]
Shannon Leto: [laughs] There you go.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): So you guys just finished filming the video for “This Is War”.
Shannon Leto: Yeah, we did. We just finished filming that a few days ago.

Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): I saw some of the pictures on MTV and obviously there’s a war theme. Could you tell us a little bit more about the video?
Shannon Leto: Nope! [laughs] It’ll come out soon and we’re trying to keep things under wraps, but it does definitely reflect a war time. It’s something we’ve never done before from the location to the content. I really can’t wait to see the finished product. The making of it was actually really, really cool. I got a chance to become a soldier. I BECAME a soldier. [laughs]


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Well, see now you’ve accomplished almost everything in life. [laughs]
Shannon Leto: You know what I mean? Except for maybe going to the moon or mars and hanging out, but yeah.

Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): That is something you should do as a band.
Shannon Leto: Maybe that’ll be our next video.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Now you guys took a long time over the past couple of years with this album because of the lawsuit and everything. What would you say the key to surviving in this music business is?
Shannon Leto: The music business has changed so much. You really have to look at the bigger picture and see where everything is falling into place, and then flow with that. There are other ways to go about making music. I think it’s not there yet, but it’s well on its way. I mean the internet is a huge, huge marketing tool. I think utilizing that helps. It’s a big question; it’s a really big question. Stick to what you believe in. Fight for what you believe in. Have people on your same team that are believing in what you believe in and just kind of go from there. But it’s a big question and it’s going to take some time for anything…I mean the record industry is collapsing. The old way of thinking is dying. People are going to have to start thinking about the new way of doing things, so…big question.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): How would you define Thirty Seconds To Mars’ message to the world?
Shannon Leto: Good questions!

Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Thank you!
Shannon Leto: Really good. I think it’s more than just guys playing their instruments on stage. It’s more than just going in and recording your instruments and putting a CD out. It’s more about a shared experience. It’s more about everybody participating if they want to participate. It’s like a big art project. It’s about community. It’s about expressing yourself any way you see fit–through the arts, through visually. It’s like one big art project. That’s kind of like the way it’s been. We have this communal aspect about the band. We share the experience with our audience, with our fans and our families as much as we can. With this last album, This Is War, we had people flying to Los Angeles–thousands of people–they sang, they chanted, they stomped, they clapped, they beat on things, and we put that on the album. So you can hear that throughout the album. It went really well. Then we did it digitally as well. So we have eight or nine different countries singing and chanting on the album. And then we had 2,000 different album covers as well–with different [fan] faces–the faces of mars, we call it. It’s more about sharing an experience. I think these days it’s important to do that, especially when you have the internet and your BlackBerrys and your iPhones and you’re always glued to that. I think there’s some experiences that aren’t shared as much as they used to be–even though they’re being shared via internet and all that. Just the physical aspect is not there as much. We’re not doing that purposely, but I think that’s how it’s going naturally. We bring people on stage as well to help sing “Kings and Queens”.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): That’s great. I love when artists do that. I’m actually a big Thirty Seconds To Mars fan, and I’m a novelist. The last book I published, "Dream catchers“–the whole time I was writing it, I listened to your music.
Shannon Leto: Oh!

Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): And there’s a band in the book and I kind of modeled them after Thirty Seconds To Mars.
Shannon Leto: Very cool, thanks! That’s VERY cool.

Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): No problem. I even put you guys in the acknowledgments for inspiring me.
Shannon Leto: Aw, thank you!

Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Thank you guys.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Has there been any really rewarding moments on this tour, so far? I know the American leg just started, but overall has there been one specific show where something amazing happened?
Shannon Leto: Well, I don’t think there’s one specific show. I think the whole thing has been rewarding. I think being able to make another album and finally having it come out. And booking the tour dates and being able to share the experience, I think that’s the overall reward. Something that comes from your soul and something that comes from, who knows where? Some celestrial place maybe…and to record that and to be able to express that to people and share that, it’s pretty amazing. It’s something that really can’t be put into words.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): What’s in Thirty Seconds To Mars’ future?
Shannon Leto: Who knows? We’re really concentrating on the tour right now. We’re really concentrating on reintroducing ourselves to America. We haven’t toured here in three years, so it’s really exciting to be able to be back home and tour again. We’re just really focusing on that and if we feel like we want to continue expressing ourselves through vehicles of music, we’ll continue to do so. If not, we’ll do something else. I think it will always be a form of expression through the arts in some way or not. Expressing yourself this way does something that conversation lacks. It does something that fulfills me personally. I’m compelled to do it so I think I will always be doing something like this.


Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): For my last question, if you could dedicate any song in the world to your fans–it doesn’t have to be your own, but can it be–which song would you pick and why?
Shannon Leto: I would dedicate [sings] we are the world, we are the–no. [laughs] You know what? We would make a song with the people. We would collaborate with the people so we could all have ownership in it. It would be special. I think that’s what we would do.

Douze ans et trois albums plus tard, 30 Seconds To Mars se sont
imposés dans l'industrie de la musique comme musicalement dynamique et
comme un groupe dont les fans du monde entier sont en contact à de
nombreux niveaux. La redactrice en chef de StarShine, Sandy Lo, eu la
chance de parler avec l'un des membre fondateur, Shannon Leto, il y a
quelques semaines pour discuter de message du groupe et de leur tournée
actuelle Into the wild.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Bonjour Shannon.

allez-vous aujourd'hui?

Shannon Leto: Bien sûr.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Comment ce passe la tournée?
Shannon
Leto: Ça se passe vraiment bien. C'est notre troisième
concert de cette tournée. Nous n'avons pas joué en Amérique depuis
trois ans. C'est excitant de partager cet album avec notre pays.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): En quoi est-ce different de jouer
pour des fans américains par rapport au reste du monde?
Shannon Leto: On se sent comme à la maison, tu sais?
On se sent juste à l'aise. Tout d'abord, nous parlons tous la même
langue, mais l'énergie est vraiment étonnante. Il n'y a rien comme
jouer pour votre pays d'origine. C'est difficile à expliquer. L'énergie
est juste différente, plus chahuteur, avec un peu plus d'excitation.. Sandy
Lo (StarShine Magazine): Je suis sûr que ça vous donne plus
d'adrénaline.
Shannon Leto: Absolument, je me
nourris de l 'énergie de la foule.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Y at-il une chanson qui reste la
favorite du public quand vous la jouez? Shannon
Leto: “The Kill”. Les gens adorent "The Kill". “A Beautiful
Lie”, “From Yesterday”. Et le public reagit beaucoup au nouvel album et
"This Is War", notre nouveau single qui est sorti. "Kings And Queens".
"The Kill" est toujours le favori de la foule, il sera toujours, vous
savez?
Sandy Lo (Magazine StarShine): Je l'ai mis sur tous les CD mix
que je fais. [Rires]
Shannon Leto: [rires] Et
voilà.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Donc, vous les gars vennez de
terminer le tournage du clip de "This Is War".
Leto
Shannon: Oui, nous avons fait. Nous venons de terminer le
tournage il ya quelques jours.
Sandy Lo (StarShine
Magazine): J'ai vu quelques unes des photos sur MTV et évidemment
le theme est la guerre. Pourriez-vous nous en dire un peu plus sur la
vidéo?
Leto Shannon: Pas du tout! [Rires] Il va
sortir bientôt et nous essayons de garder les choses secretes, mais il
reflete un temps de guerre. C'est quelque chose que nous n'avons
jamais fait avant de l'emplacement au contenu. Je ne peux vraiment pas
attendre de voir la video terminée. La réalisation de celle-ci a
effectivement été vraiment, vraiment cool. J'ai eu la chance de devenir
soldat. Je SUIS devenu un soldat. [Rires]
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Eh bien, il semble que vous
avez accompli presque tout dans la vie. [Rires]
Shannon
Leto: Vous voyez ce que je veux dire? Sauf peut-être pour
aller sur la Lune ou sur Mars et la resistance, mais oui. Sandy
Lo (StarShine Magazine): C'est quelque chose que vous devez faire
en tant que groupe.
Shannon Leto: Peut-être que ce
sera notre prochaine vidéo.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Maintenant, vous avez pris beaucoup
de temps au cours des deux dernières années, avec cet album en raison
des poursuites judiciaires et tout. Quelles sont les clés pour
survivre dans ce monde de la musique ? Shannon
Leto: Le business de la musique a tellement changé. Il faut
vraiment se pencher sur la situation d'ensemble et de voir où tout se
met en place,et s'adapter a cela . Il ya d'autres façons de s'y prendre
pour faire de la musique. Je pense que ce n'est pas encore ça, mais
c'est en bonne voie. Je veux dire, l'Internet est une énorme outil de
marketing, vraiment énorme. Je pense que l'utiliser aide. C'est une
grande question, c'est une tres grande question. Stick to what you
believe in. Fight for what you believe in. Have people on your same
team that are believing in what you believe in and just kind of go from
there. Perseverez dans ce que vous croyez, battez vous pour ce en quoi
vous croyez, ayez dans votre equipe des gens qui croient en ce que vous
croyez, et qui partez de là. Mais c'est une grande question et ça va
prendre du temps pour tout... Je veux dire l'industrie du disque
s'effondre. L'ancienne façon de penser est mourante. Les gens vont
devoir commencer à penser à la nouvelle façon de faire les choses,
alors ... grande question.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Comment définiriez-vous le message
de 30 seconds to Mars au monde? Shannon Leto:
Les bonnes questions!
Sandy Lo (Magazine StarShine): Je
vous remercie!
Shannon Leto: Vraiment
bien. Je pense que c'est plus que juste des mecs qui jouent de leurs
instruments sur scène. C'est plus que juste entrer et enregistrer vos
instruments et de sortir un CD. C' est plus sur une expérience
partagée. C'est plus sur tous ceux qui veulent participer si ils le
veulent. C'est comme un grand projet artistique. Il s'agit de la
communauté. It's about expressing yourself any way you see fit–through
the arts, through visually. Il s'agit de vous exprimer dans tous les
domaines dans lesquels vous vous sentez bien, à travers les arts, à
travers des visuels. C'est comme un grand projet artistique. C'est un
peu comme la façon dont il a été. Nous avons cet aspect communal sur
le groupe. Nous partageons l'expérience avec notre public, avec nos
fans et nos familles autant que nous le pouvons. Avec ce dernier
album, This is war, nous avons eu des gens qui ont pris un avion pour
Los Angeles, des milliers de personnes, ils ont chanté, ils ont tapé
du pied, ils ont frappé dans leurs mains, ils ont battu la mesure sur
des choses, et nous avons mis ça sur l'album. Ainsi, vous pouvez
l'entendre tout au long de l'album. Ca s'est très bien passé. Puis
nous l'avons fait de façon numérique. Donc, nous avons huit ou neuf pays
différents chantant et scandant sur l'album. And then we had 2,000
different album covers as well–with different [fan] faces–the faces of
mars, we call it. Et puis nous avons eu 2 000 couvertures d'albums
différentes, avec les différents visages des fans, les visages de
Mars, comme nous l'appelons. C'est plus sur le partage d'une
expérience. Je pense que ces jours-ci, il est important de le faire,
surtout quand vous avez l'Internet et votre BlackBerry et votre iPhone
et vous êtes toujours collés à ça. Je pense qu'il ya des expériences
qui ne sont pas partagées autant qu'ils ont l'habitude d'être, même si
ils sont sont partagés via Internet et tout ça. Juste l'aspect
physique n'est pas autant là. Nous ne faisons pas cela dans un but
precis, mais je pense que c'est la façon dont cela se fait
naturellement. Nous rassemblons des personnes sur scène pour aider à
chanter "Kings And Queens".
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): C'est génial. J'aime quand les
artistes font cela. Je suis en fait une grande fan de 30 seconds to
mars, je suis un romanciere etc... Le dernier livre que j'ai publié, "
Dream Catchers ", tout le temps que je l'écrivais,
j'ai écouté votre musique.
Leto Shannon: Oh!

Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Y at-il eu des moments vraiment
enrichissante sur cette tournée, à ce jour? Je sais que la
tournée américaine vient de commencer, mais il a t-il eu en général un
spectacle précis où quelque chose d'extraordinaire s'est passé?
Shannon Leto: Eh bien, je ne pense pas qu'il y ai un
concert spécifique. Je pense que tout cela a été enrichissant. Je
pense au fait d'être en mesure de faire un autre album et de l'avoir
enfin sorti. Et de reserver les dates de tournée et d'être capable de
partager l'expérience, je pense que ça, c'est la récompense globale.
Quelque chose qui vient de votre âme et quelque chose qui vient, qui
sait d' où? D'un endroit celeste peut-être ... et d'enregistrer cela et
d'être en mesure de l'exprimer et de la partager, c'est assez
étonnant. C'est quelque chose qui ne peut pas etre decrit avec des
mots.

Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Quel est l'avenir de 30 Seconds to
mars?
Shannon Leto: Qui sait? Nous sommes vraiment
concentrés sur la tournée en ce moment. . Nous sommes vraiment nous
concentrer sur notre réintroduction en l'Amérique. Nous n'avons pas
tourné ici pendant trois ans, alors c'est vraiment excitant d'être de
retour à la maison et en tournée. Nous nous focalisons sur cela, et si
on a l'envie de nous exprimer via la musique, nous continuerons de le
faire. juste vraiment mettant l'accent sur cela et si nous nous sentons
comme nous voulons continuer à nous exprimer par des véhicules de la
musique, nous allons continuer à le faire. Sinon, nous ferons quelque
chose d'autre. Je pense qu'il y aura toujours une forme d'expression
par les arts d'une manière ou d'une autre . Vous exprimer de cette
façon apporte quelquechose de plus qu'une conversation . Ca fait quelque
chose qui me comble personnellement. Je suis obligé de le faire, je
pense que je vais toujours faire quelque chose comme ça.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): For my last question, if you could

own, but can it be–which song would you pick and why? Sandy Lo
(StarShine Magazine): Pour ma dernière question, si vous deviez
dedicacer une chanson dans le monde à vos fans- pas obligatoirement
l'une des votres, mais quelle chanson choisiriez-vous et pourquoi?
Shannon Leto: Je voudrais dédier [chante] we are the
world, we are the... non. [Rires] Tu sais quoi? Nous souhaitons faire
une chanson avec les gens. Nous aimerions collaborer avec les gens et
nous pourrions tous avoir un droit de propriete sur elle. Ca serait
extraordinaire. Je pense que c'est ce que nous devrions faire.
Sandy Lo (StarShine Magazine): Ça augure bien. Eh
bien, je vous remercie beaucoup Shannon pour l'entrevue. J'ai hâte
de vous voir les gars en concert le 24 à Philadelphie.
Leto Shannon: Yeah! Venez nous dire bonjour!
