At this point, Jared Leto is getting pretty used to conflict. He and his 30 Seconds to Mars bandmates battled their way through the making of their This Is War album, and they basically willed the first single, the epic "Kings and Queen" onto the rock radio charts.
So when it came time to shoot a video for the second single — the equally soaring title track from the album — well, they pretty much knew the direction they wanted to head.
"The song is really about conflict, and the album really is about it too: the inevitability of conflict, the blessing of conflict and what we can all learn from it. We've certainly had our fair share of it," Leto told MTV News on Friday (April 9). "So for the 'This Is War' video, we wanted to explore another side of it. So we decided to portray soldiers in conflict."

And so, in the video, Leto and company donned U.S. Army fatigues — and body armor — picked up standard-issue M4 rifles and piled into an armored Humvee. Working with director Edouard Salier, they've created a short film that looks at conflict through the eyes of the men and women who live it every day. And, much like everything involving 30 Seconds to Mars, they went all in.
"We worked with one of my oldest friends, who served in the Special Forces and has been in Iraq several times. He was our consultant. It was incredible to take a look into his world and his life, the knowledge and expertise he's gained," Leto said. "A lot of people are going to interpret this piece in a lot of different ways, and hopefully it will start some debates and some conversations.
"The video made us realize that underneath the uniforms, these men and women out there in conflict are just like you and I. When we put them on, I looked at my brother, looked at [guitarist] Tomo [Milicevic], and they looked like soldiers," he continued. "You start to walk like a soldier, feel like a soldier, when you're wearing body armor and carrying a working M4 ... it's an impactful experience. It was definitely provocative for us. It made us think, and that's the point of the whole thing."

Leto wouldn't divulge too much about the concept of the video, only saying that the video contains "a surprise" and features plenty of visual effects. The band shot the video outside of Los Angeles, days after wrapping their first-ever European arena tour, just before they headed down to Las Vegas to begin rehearsals for the U.S. leg of their Into the Wild jaunt. And while it was exhausting, Leto said that was just part of the whole experience. And, by now, they're used to battling a bit.

"As is the case with everything involving this band, it was more exciting than exhausting, to be honest. In a way, it feels like the beginning again," he said. "When we were making this album, we took advantage of the opportunity to rediscover ourselves. So it's really a celebration. We're just excited to continue on this journey."

They just wrapped their first-ever run of arena shows in Europe, shot a combat-themed music video for "This Is War" and kicked off the U.S. leg of their Into the Wild tour. So why, with so much forward momentum, does Jared Leto consider everything 30 Seconds to Mars are doing to be a gigantic step back to square one?
"I've said this before, but the most exciting thing about being in this band right now is that it feels like the beginning again. Making this album, we rediscovered ourselves, and we emerged as something different," Leto told MTV News. "We did the tour of Europe, which was a new beginning for us, and now we're touring America. And to have not toured here in three years, it's a massive celebration for us and our fans. We feel like we're beginning the journey again, here in this country."
The journey actually began on Friday in Las Vegas, when 30STM launched their Into the Wild trek at the Palms Casino Resort's Pearl Theater. The tour will crisscross the country until mid-May, at which point the band will actually take about a month off before heading back to Europe for the summer fest circuit — though, as Leto points out, they're not taking a break willingly.

"We're just really excited, and we don't want to stop," he laughed. "This band is never exhausted. We've been able to play the songs on This Is War for audiences in Europe, and now we're getting to play them for fans here. And right now, that's what's most exciting ... to have people hear it and experience it."
And just what can fans expect on the U.S. leg of Into the Wild? Leto's not saying. You've got to come out and see the show for yourself.
"Like I said, it's a celebration, it's emotional, it's a big, loud show," he explained. "But, really, you've got to come out and see it. That's the best way to put it."

Arrivé à ce point, Jared Leto est plutôt habitué au conflit. Lui ainsi que ses partenaires des 30 Seconds to Mars ont lutté pour le making of de leur album This Is War, et ils ont pour l'essentiel légué aux charts des radio rock le premier single, l'épique "Kings and Queen".
Donc, quand le moment de tourner le clip pour le deuxième single est arrivé - piste de l'album qui monte également en flèche - et bien, ils savaient plutôt bien la direction qu'ils voulaient prendre.
"La chanson est vraiment à propos du conflit, et l'album aussi: le caractère inévitable d'un conflit, le bienfait d'un conflit et ce que nous en apprenons. Nous avons certainement eu notre part de bataille" a dit Leto à MTV News, vendredi (9 Avril). "Donc pour le clip de 'This Is War', nous voulions explorer une autre vision du conflit. Alors on a décidé de dresser le portrait des soldats lors d'un conflit."

Et c'est ainsi que dans le clip, Leto et compagnie ont revêtu les trillis de l'U.S. Army - gilets par-balles- ont pris les fusils M4 standards et se sont entassés dans un "Humvee" blindé (pour info, un Humvee est un Hummer destiné à l'usage militaire). En travaillant avec le directeur Edouard Salier, ils ont créé un court métrage sur le conflit à travers les yeux des hommes et femmes qui le vivent chaque jour. Et, comme chaque chose incluant les 30 Seconds to Mars, ils sont allés à fond.
"Nous avons travaillé avec une des mes plus vieux amis qui a servi dans les Forces spéciales et a été plusieurs fois en Irak. Il était notre consultant. C'était incroyable de voir son monde et sa vie, la connaissance et l'expertise qu'il a acquis," dit Leto. "Beaucoup de gens vont interpréter cette pièce de manières très différents, et avec un peu de chance, il va créer des débats et quelques conversations.
"Ce clip nous a fait réaliser que sous ces uniformes, ces hommes et femmes qui sont au milieu des conflits, sont justes comme vous et moi. Quand on les a portés, j'ai regardé mon frère, Tomo [guitarist] [Milicevic], et ils ressemblaient à des soldats," continue t-il. "Tu commences à marcher comme un soldat, te sentir soldat, quand tu portes un gilet par-balles et as dans les mains un M4 qui fonctionne... c'est une expérience impactante. C'était définitivement provoquant pour nous. Cela nous a fait réfléchir et c'est le but de tout ça."

Leto ne divulguerait pas trop de choses sur le concept du clip, il dit juste que le clip contient "une surprise" et comporte pleins d'effets spéciaux. Le groupe a tourné le clip en dehors de Los Angeles, quelques jours après avoir clôturé la toute première tournée européenne et juste avant de se rendre à Las Vegas pour commencer les répétitions pour l'étape américaine de leur balade Into the Wild. Et alors que c'était fatiguant, Leto a dit que cela faisait justement partie de toute l'expérience. Et, depuis, ils sont juste habitués à batailler un peu.

"Comme c'est le cas dans toute chose incluant le groupe, c'était plus excitant que fatiguant, pour être honnête. D'une certaine manière, ça se ressent comme un nouveau commencement," dit-il. "Quand nous faisions cet album, nous avons pris l'avantage d'avoir l'opportunité de nous redécouvrir. C'est donc une vraie célébration. Nous sommes juste excités de continuer ce voyage."

En fait le voyage a commencé Vendredi à Las Vegas, quand 30STM a lancé leur Into the Wild trek au Palms Casino Resort's Pearl Theater. La tournée va traverser le pays jusqu'à la mi-mai, où le groupe va prendre un mois de repos avant de retourner en Europe pour le circuit des festivals d'été — bien que, comme Leto le signale, ils ne font pas un break volontiers.

"Nous sommes juste vraiment excités, et nous ne voulons pas arrêter," rit-il. "Ce groupe n'est jamais fatigué. Nous avons pu jouer les chansons de This Is War pour les publics en Europe, et maintenant, on peut les chanter pour les fans d'ici. Et pour l'instant, c'est ce qui est le plus excitant... que les gens les entendent et les expérimentent."
Et à quoi peuvent s'attendre les fans de l'étape U.S. de Into the Wild? Leto ne le dit pas. Vosu devez venir et voir le show vous-même.
"Comme je l'ai dit, c'est une célébration, c'est émotionnel, c'est un show géant et bruyant," explique t-il. "Mais, sérieux, vous devez venir et le voir. C'est le meilleur moyen de l'évaluer."
