30 Seconds to Mars Perth concert review

IT has been a long-time coming for fans of 30 Seconds to Mars, who
opted out of attending On the Bright Side festival to listen to the
rocking trio.

The alternative music group finally made their mark on Perth, and boy was it worth the wait.

Lead
singer and sometimes actor Jared Leto has clearly backed away from his
pretty boy image, virtually unrecognisable with a peroxide blonde Mohawk
and a strut that gave Tim Curry's, in Rocky Horror Picture Show, a run for its money.

He jumped into Night of the Hunter and End of the Beginning
with such veracity, the crowd were helpless to his charisma. This
concert was certainly not one for children as every second word out of
Leto's mouth was an expletive. No one was complaining though.

The
crowd engagement was superb as Leto moved around the stage, kept
throwing water bottles to the audience and kept repeating how much he
loved Australia and wanted everyone to"get crazy". He would stop the
show regularly to make sure the punters were having a good time and
stated that it was not a "sit down concert, so to stand up and if anyone
tries to make you sit down to let him know". That sentence alone sums
up how high-energy their set was.

Vocally, Leto was strong throughout the show, hitting all the
high notes. The one gripe was how he kept getting the crowd to sing and
sometimes they just didn't know the words. It would have been better if
he had just sang a song all the way through. While his voice was loud,
at times it was drowned out by the instruments, but there was no
denying the stage presence of the trio and how good they were at
entertaining the masses.


Before he began This is War he
encouraged the people in the moshpit to come closer and for those who
didn't want to be there to go to the "sleepy section". He restarted a
song because he wanted everyone to jump at the same time, needless to
say, everyone was happy to oblige, especially after he declared he was
going to become an Australian citizen.


Leto's brother Shannon,
who is the group's drummer, took to his acoustic guitar for a beautiful
instrumental. In the meantime Leto went unnoticed into the crowd and
appeared shortly after towards the back of the Challenge Stadium near
the sound desk.
Changing his guitar frequently throughout the show, he performed Hurricane followed by From Yesterday and The Kill.
The time he spent in the crowd was certainly the highlight of the show
as his voice shone over the awe-struck audience. It was quite
refreshing that he didn't seem to care about physical contact from the
punters, unlike other artists who have five bodyguards around them,
despite a number of people trying to jump on him in their excitement. He
kept asking "you having fun yet?!" The general consensus was yes, yes
we were.


He loved revving up the crowd as he made them repeat the word no as he filmed them for a video the band was creating. He sang Closer to the Edge
and made mention of On the Bright Side festival, thanking everyone for
coming to their show considering they could have gone to the Esplanade
concert, which featured The Strokes, Mumford & Sons and Band of
Horses.


Their other notable songs included Beautiful Lie and Alibi,
but it was when he began calling people from the crowd to grace him
onstage that the show really went into overdrive. People were chomping
at the bits to get asked on stage and Leto had to tell people to be safe
as they clambered towards it. One of Leto's over-zealous fans nearly
knocked him down but he didn't seem to mind. As the group ended the
show with Kings & Queens, he stopped the music and said
"this is the last chorus of the last song, are you ready to go nuts?"
and called on everyone to get up from their seats and go to the moshpit.
It was a powerful end to what an outstanding show. Leto promised the
band would come back again soon, here's hoping.

Cela a été un dur choix, pour les fans de 30 Seconds to Mars, de retirer leur participation au festival Bright Side pour écouter les trios de
rockeurs.
Le groupe de musique alternative a finalement fait leur marque sur Perth, et les garçons valaient la peine d'attendre.

Le chanteur et parfois acteur Jared Leto a clairement renoncé à son image de joli garçon, avec un Mohawk péroxydé blond qui le fait devenir presque méconnaissable et un montant donné par Tim Curry, à Rocky Horror Picture Show, une course pour son argent.[désolée mais je n'ai rien compris, là...]

Il a sauté sur "Night Of the hunter" et "End of the beginning" avec une telle véracité, la foule était impuissante face à son charisme. Ce concert n'était certainement pas un concert pour les enfants car chaque 2ème mot qui sortait de la bouche de Jared Leto était une injure. Mais pourtant, personne ne se plaignait.

L'engagement de la foule était superbe avec Leto qui sauté autour de la scène, qui lancait des bouteilles d'eau à l'auditoire et qui ne cessait de répéter combien il aimait l'Australie et qu'il voulait que tout le monde "deviennent fou". Il arrêtait régulièrement le spectacle pour s'assurer que les gens passaient un bon moment et il a déclaré "sit down concert, so to stand up and if anyone tries to make you sit down to let him know" ("Si vous êtes assis pendant le concert, alors levez-vous et si quelqu'un essaie de vous faire rassoir, faite-le moi savoir"). Cette seule phrase résume l'énergie qu'il y avait dans la foule.

Vocalement, Leto a été soutenue tout au long du spectacle, frappant toutes les notes hautes. On se demandait comment il réussissait à faire autant chanter la foule et parfois, il n'avait lui-même plus les mots. Ça aurait été mieux si il avait chanté une chanson toute entière. Bien que sa voix était forte, elle était parfois couverte par les instruments, mais on ne peut nier la présence sur scène du trio et comment ils ont été bons pour divertir la foule.

Avant de commencer "This Is War" il encouragé le peuple à se rapprocher pour le moshpit et pour ceux qui n'en avaient pas envie, il leur disait d'aller dans la « section sommeil ».Il a recommencé une chanson parce qu'il voulait que chacun saute en même temps. Inutile de dire qu'ils étaient tous heureux, surtout après qu'il a déclaré qu'il allait devenir un citoyen australien.

Le frère de Jared, Shannon Leto, qui est le batteur du groupe, a pris sa guitare acoustique pour une belle instrumentale. Dans l'intervalle, Leto est passé inaperçu dans la foule et est apparu peu de temps après vers l'arrière du Stade Challenge, près du bureau du son.
Il a souvent changé de guitare tout au long du spectacle, il a joué "Hurricane" suivie de "From Yesterday" et de "The Kill".
Le temps qu'il a passé dans la foule a été certainement le clou du spectacle. Sa voix brillait sur un public ébahis. C'était tout à fait rafraîchissant qu'il ne semble pas se soucier du contact physique avec le public, contrairement à d'autres artistes qui ont cinq gardes du corps autour d'eux, en dépit d'un certain nombre de gens qui essaient de sauter sur lui dans leur excitation. Il n'arrêtait pas de demander "vous vous amuser encore?" La réponse général était « oui, oui, nous nous amusons ».

Il aimait que la foule répète des mots comme dans une des vidéos du groupe. Il a chanté "Closer To The Edge" et fait mention du « On the Bright Side festival », remerciant tout le monde d'être venus à leur spectacle étant donné qu'ils auraient pu aller au concert de l'Esplanade, qui présentait The Strokes, Mumford & Sons et Band of Horses.

Leurs autres chansons notables étaient « A Beautiful Lie » et « Alibi », mais c'était quand il a commencé à appeler les gens de la foule sur scène que le spectacle s'est vraiment passé dans le surmenage. Les gens criaient pour demandé à être sur scène et Leto avait à dire que c'était sûr que telle et telle personne grimperaient vers lui. Comme le groupe termine le spectacle avec Kings & Queens, il a arrêté la musique et dit "ceci est le dernier refrain de la dernière chanson, êtes-vous prêt à devenir fou ?" et a demandé à tous de se lever de leurs sièges et d'aller à la Moshpit. Ce fut une belle fin pour ce puissant et remarquable spectacle. Leto a promis que la groupe reviendrait bientôt.
