Musicstage.se caught up with the guys at the Swedish radio station Bandit Rock’s studio in Gothenburg before their gig at the Pier Pressure festival to have a little chit chat about festivals and the ongoing tour.

Welcome back to Sweden! Are you only doing festivals during the European summer?
- We have a couple of headlining dates in between. ’Cause you know, festivals are during the weekend, says Tomo.
Jared: We did Leipzig, Dortmund and Frankfurt.
Tomo continues: …we’ll be in Bielefeld in a couple of days.

So, how was the Download Festival? [The second biggest festival in the UK]
Shannon: Download was amazing! It was very, very crowded. I don’t think any more people could have stood in front of us.
Tomo: Yeah, Download was great, Rock am Ring was great, Rock im Park was great. All the festivals that we’ve been playing so far have been great. Provinssirock in Finland, Caribana in Switzerland.
- Caribana, a little hobbitville. They’ve all been really, really fun, says Shannon.

I saw you supporting Linkin Park a few years ago. I also saw you back in February headlining your own show, and I’ll be seeing you at the Pier Pressure festival tonight.
What kind of shows do you prefer playing?
- Nothing beats a headlining show really, Jared almost whispers. But they are all cool though.
Shannon: Yeah, opening is fun but headlining’s the ultimate. It’s your show, you get to do basically what you want, you know.

You are touring pretty intensely right now, how does the band’s future look like?
Tomo: Basically right now, we’re really not thinking about new stuff so much ‘cause we’re touring for This is war, and focusing on promoting that record but I know that during soundchecks there are some melodies and some stuff starting to appear again now, so we’ll see what happens. But right now it’s all about This is war. We’re touring for the rest of this year, and we already have shows booked into 2011, so we’re not done with this anytime soon.
Jared: We’ve been touring for seven months, and we have July-December... another six months, so that’s thirteen months straight.
Tomo: We’ve had maybe a total of three weeks off. Including Christmas break.

… so when you’re touring, you are really focusing on the tour. You are not thinking about new stuff...
Tomo: Not at the moment. I mean, at some point Jared will start fiddling with some new ideas.

Do you (Jared) write all the songs?
- Yes, pretty much. Shannon wrote a song on the last record that was very nice called L490.
Shannon: If you are an artist you never stop creating. You’re always creating. I’m always banging drums. Always. There is always something.

What’s the next leg of the tour, Asia, South America?
Tomo: Everywhere that will have us.
Jared: We’re going to Australia, Asia, Russia...

Do you find the time to listen to other bands?
- It’s funny, for some reason lately I haven’t been listening to very much at all.
It’s weird ‘cause I usually listen to everything, Tomo laughs.
- I listened to M83 last night. It’s really good. Some other bands I keep meaning to listen to, like Phoenix, Fever Ray, says Jared while yawning.
Shannon: I was listening to The XX yesterday. It’s interesting.
The new Crystal Castles record is really, really cool. And La Roux! I like La Roux, how funny is that! says Tomo and laughs again.

Final question, what can we expect for tonight’s show?
Shannon: You know, we don’t know!
Tomo: It’s very spontaneous for us. We just go up on stage and whatever happens happens.

…'cause I was looking at some previous setlists and I noticed that you’ve played a cover of Lady Gaga's Bad romance...?
- Uh oh! says Shannon with a smile.
Jared: We did it for Radio 1 in London. So it’s kind of something different.
Shannon: Tonight can be really exciting. Very spontaneous. Lots of energy. There will be a surprise tonight as well. Huge. The most amazing. Ever.
Tomo: it will be the most profound thing anyone in this country has ever seen. Or heard.
- Tonight. Here, says Shannon and looks like he really means it.

Thirty Seconds to Mars was actually coming back for the third time this year to play the Hultsfred festival tonight. Unfortunately the festival got cancelled

Alors, comment a été le Download Festival [le second plus grand festival au Royaume-Uni]?
Shannon: Le Download a été génial! C’était vraiment vraiment plein de monde. Je ne pensais pas qu’on pouvait avoir autant de monde devant nous.
Tomo: Ouaih, le Download était cool, le Rock am Ring était cool, le Rock im Park était cool. Tout les festivals qu’on a fait jusqu’à maintenant ont été bien. Provinssirock en Finland, Caribana en Suisse.
- Caribana, une petite ville de hobbit. Ils ont tous été vraiment vraiment sympa, ajoute Shannon.

Je vous ai vu en première partie de Linkin park il y a quelques années. Je vous ai aussi vu de retour en février pour vos propres shows et je vous verrais au Pier Pressure ce soir. Quels sont les shows que vous préférez faire?
- Rien ne peut battre un concert en tête d’affiche, murmure presque Jared. Mais ils sont tous cool malgré tout.
Shannon: Ouaih, faire une première partie c’est sympa mais diriger son propre concert c’est ultime. C’est ton show, tu peux faire ce que tu veux tu vois.

Vous tourner de façon intense en ce moment, à quoi ressemble le futur du groupe ?
Tomo: Là, maintenant, on ne pense vraiment pas trop à de nouvelles choses parce qu’on tourne pour This is War et on se concentre sur la promo de cet album mais je sais que durant les balances il y a quelques mélodies et quelques trucs qui commencent à apparaître à nouveau maintenant, donc on verra ce qui se passe. Mais actuellement, tout tourne autour de This is War. On sera en tournée pour le reste de l’année, et on a déjà des shows prévus pour 2011, donc on est pas prêt d’en avoir fini avec ça
Jared: On tourne depuis 7 mois, et nous avons de Juillet à décembre… 6 autres mois, ça fait 13 mois de suite.
Tomo: On a peut-être eu un total de 3 semaines de pause. En comptant Noël.

… Donc quand vous êtes en tournée, vous vous concentrez vraiment sur ça. Vous ne pensez pas à de nouvelles choses…
Tomo: Pas en ce moment. Je veux dire… au bout d’un moment, Jared commencera [forcément] à bidouiller de nouvelles
idées.
Est-ce que tu [Jared] écris toutes les chansons?
-Oui quasiment. Shannon a écrit une chanson sur le dernier album qui est très bien, elle s’appelle L490.
Shannon: Si tu es un artiste, tu ne t’arrêtes jamais de créer. Tu crées tout le temps. Je suis toujours en train de taper sur ma batterie. Toujours. Il y a toujours quelque chose.

Quelle est la prochaine partie du tour, l’Asie, l’Amérique du Sud?
Tomo: Tout les endroits qui nous auront.
Jared: On va aller en Australie, en Asie, en Russie…

Trouvez-vous le temps d’écouter d’autres groupes?
- C’est marrant, pour certaines raisons je n’ai pas écouté beaucoup de musique ces derniers temps. C’est étrange parce que d’habitude j’écoute de tout, rigole Tomo.
- J’ai écouté M83 la nuit dernière. C’est très bon. Et d’autres groupes que je continue d’écouter comme Phoenix, Fever Ray, baille Jared
Shannon: J’ai écouté The XX hier. C’est intéressant.
Le nouvel album de Crystal Castles est vraiment vraiment cool. Et La Roux ! J’aime bien La Roux, comme c’est drôle! Rit encore Tomo

Question finale, que pouvons nous attendre du show de ce soir ?
Shannon: Tu sais, on l’ignore!
Tomo: C’est très spontané pour nous. On se contente de monter sur scène et ce qui doit arriver arrive

…Parce que j’ai regardé quelques unes de vos setlists précédentes et j’ai remarqué que vous aviez joué une cover de Bad Romance de Lady Gaga…?
-
Oh oh! Sourit Shannon.
Jared: On l’a fait pour Radio 1 à Londres. Donc c’est quelque chose d’un peu différent.
Shannon: Ce soir peut être vraiment excitant. Très spontané. Plein d’énergie. Il y aura aussi une surprise ce soir. Enorme. La plus belle. Qu’il y ait jamais eu.

Tomo: Ca sera la chose la plus profonde que personne ait jamais vu dans ce pays. Ou entendu
- Ce soir. Ici, ajoute Shannon avec l’air de le penser réellement.

Thirty Seconds to Mars revenaient en fait pour la 3ème fois cette année pour participer au Hultsfred Festival ce soir.
Malheureusement il a été annulé.
