- Thirty Seconds to Mars celebrated their three MTV EMA nominations with a crowd-pleasing performance at Itunes Festival 2013.
The Echelon lived up to their reputation as one of music’s most passionate fanbases – who ultimately invade the stage – as their leader Jared Leto sent the Roundhouse into raptures. Feeling: 30STM are here for a special night and clearly won’t be satisfied with an average show. Jared is determined to have everyone singing along and the early signs are that he’ll get his way.
Midway through their second song Search and Destroy, the multi-talented 41-year-old twice orders his two bandmates to stop playing so he can demand more from the Camden crowd. He spots and has a good-humoured pop at one “bro” who isn’t jumping around and tells people standing in the seated section next to someone sitting down to grab them up by the testicles!
Look: Frontman Jared walks out to Birth rocking shades and a black fur coat that any self-respecting goth pimp would be proud of, while his inked brother Shannon smashes his sideways-facing drums in a vest with his hair tied back.
While the colour-changing balls and balloons they release are highlights, these are blown away in two interlude tracks by a suited acrobat wearing a gas mask on a cyr wheel (who stars in their epic VMA-winning and EMA-nominated Up in the Air video) during Depuis Le Début and even more by two smartly-dressed gymnasts who somersault on a seesaw as Pyres of Varanasi plays.
Banter: “Amen!”, “Hallelujah!” and “Praise the Lord!” shouts the singer between songs – making it extremely difficult not to liken Jared’s latest look to Jesus.
He’s funny and has 30STM die-hards responding to every word he's saying and every hand movement he's making.
“I’m available for lovemaking if you want?!” made us laugh. And, quite understandably after one look at his supermodel face, there are at least a few hundred people at the Roundhouse who would accept that offer in a heartbeat.
Tunes: Lots of their most recent album Love Lust Faith + Dreams as you would expect, but it just wouldn’t be a Mars gig without their live favourites This Is War, The Kill and Closer to the Edge.
For their big Up in the Air finale, Jared picks out dozens of excited fans to join him on-stage and sing their lungs out. It’s impossible not to smile, especially when ticker tape explodes and showers everyone.
Sweat Factor: It says a lot when the frontman decides to totally drench himself in water.
Summary: Jared’s vocals went from weak to powerful throughout their 90-minute set, but he more than makes up for it with his brilliant crowd interaction.
Anyone with tickets to see the LA trio on their UK arena tour later this year shouldn’t be disappointed. Source: Thirty Seconds to Mars Mars Army | |
